RAU hosted 688 farmers over four days

Carol and I want you to rejoice with us in the work that your partnership of prayer, financial gifts, love and eternal perspective are effecting and enabling across the ocean!  These newsletters are a way for you to “come and see” even though you may not be able to travel the distance.

We are looking forward to Module Two of our church leadership trainings in the RAU Hall of Tyrannus next week. In our last newsletter we shared about Module One. Module Two is Good Soil’sThe Roots of Faith Old Testament. Good Soil is a branch of ABWE. “The Roots of Faith – Old Testament course unfolds the story of a perfect world that became cursed by sin and the giving of promises regarding a Jewish King who would become the Savior of the world. Each student will receive a  200 page workbook which includes four pages for each of the 50 event-lessons. Each of the 50 Bible event-lessons includes: a Focus page, a two-page lesson spread, and a narrative summary of the event-lesson. Workbooks include a divider tab for each of the 15 sections. Pages are beautifully and colorfully illustrated.” Carol and I received training this last October from Good Soil. It was a blessed and encouraging time. RAU’s Module Two  Roots of Faith :OT will run from February 21st-26th. After completion, each student will be certified to teach it. RAU’s push remains 2 Timothy 2:2 and we will encourage church leaders in attendance to immediately begin teaching what they have learned. RAU is grateful for our partnership with ABWE. An added joy is that missionary friends, Greg and Kilby Helms,  working in and around Arua, will be spending the week with us, too.

This is the ABWE teaching team:

• David Drullinger: After David’s retirement from Cedarville University he joined ABWE and moved to South Africa helping with theological training. He was recently appointed the Regional Director of South Africa.
• Dan Cook: Dan is an ABWE missionary in Brazil. He is involved in leadership training, church planting and is the regional director of Good Soil in Brazil
• Randy Southwell: Randy is the ABWE Overseas Director of Good Soil Evangelism & Discipleship Ministries. ABWE headquarters are in New Cumberland Pennsylvania which is near Harrisburg  Pennsylvania.
• Caleb Mitchell: Caleb is an ABWE missionary here in Uganda based in Jinja. He is involved in discipleship and leadership training. Caleb is ABWE’s East Africa Regional Director

We had four full days ( Feb. 2, 3, 7 & 9) of agricultural training here at RAU’s demo farm and box gardens.  World Vision brought farmers from the nearby refugee settlements/& host communities. Along with the World Vision team, ZOA (a Danish NGO) and the OPM (Office of the Prime Minister) were represented. In the four days, we interacted with 688  farmers. Two farmers came as representatives of each of 334 Farmer’s Groups. We were told by World Vision that each group has 27-30 members. This means that, potentially, 9,018 farmers will be exposed to new farming practices and “Farming as a Business” principles, if the participants return to their homes and practice our motto of 2 Timothy 2:2 (Teaching faithful people who, in turn, teach others to teach others). ​

All the participants were divided into 3 groups and each group rotated between 3 stations each day (On two days we had separate groups of farmers in the mornings and afternoons): Stations:1. Box Gardens 2. Drip Irrigation 3. Mango and Land management. Odendi Zakeo handled the Box Gardens, Paul George, the Drip irrigation, and I handled Mango and Land management. There was no way, with this large group , to go into great depth on every aspect of any of the areas, but they were definitely exposed to some great information and ideas, especially being inspired with “Farming as a Business“. One of the wonderful things is that we found a company here in Uganda which sells drip irrigation kits similar to the Chapin kits we have here that were donated by M.A.R.S. ( Missionary Agricultural Resource Services), so we were able to give them the contact information to get their own. Carol and I are so grateful for the many years M.A.R.S. has supported and stood with RAU in its agricultural ministry.  That was always one of the questions the farmers would ask when they saw how well the irrigation system worked, “How do we get this kind of system?”  Even though the system is a bit expensive for the average farmer, we tried to explain with examples how the results would pay for the system after just a few harvests from a small box garden.

Station 2: Micro/Drip Irrigation with Paul George, Tiondi Patrick and Onette Zorah

In the opening session, I explained that the “why” of what we are doing is Jesus. They all had access to gospel literature. Our sincere desire is that each person took something away which inspired them or taught them to see a way forward which has long term impact for them and their families! We are grateful for the RAU team that keeps on working tirelessly so that we have a beautiful place to showcase. I am grateful for the good partnership with World Vision as well as with their regional director, Lanek Pollicap. I am quite sure this is only the beginning with World Vision. ZOA is also requesting to bring farmers and they are also doing good work among the Refugees. It was good to have government representatives here as well so they could “look and see“. RAU continues its policy of not charging any fees (though that is the normal practice here in Uganda) to World Vision, other groups or to any famers  who come to RAU’s demo farm to learn. 

Station 3: Grafted Mango Production and Land Management with Jacob Lee and Alumai Henery

I will not make a mistake of losing contact with you and if there are opportunity to bring more people to your farm for more learning, I will, including linking more partners to you as long as they are ready to learn. Looking forward for more Ministry work together.”

On February 5th we were in Aliodranyosi, a Yumbe village which has a desperate need for clean water.  They are literally drinking murky water from a hole which seeps through the ground. Proverbs 25:25 says “As cold water to a tired soul, so is good news from a far country.” In our case, the “cold water” WAS the good news. We also had the privilege of letting them know that a loving gift was given which would provide them a proper borehole with a hand pump, allowing them to drink clear, clean water. I love to tell them the “why” of the gift (the love of God through His people) and the “how” (RAU is only a pipeline of grace and it will take a process but the process will soon begin.) I reminded them that the borehole (well) when finished will now become THEIRS, which means the upkeep belongs to them to manage with the help of a water committee (formed by them) which collects a small monthly fee that is saved for future needs. So far that has been working very well in the 23 other villages where RAU has been able to assist with a borehole. We are grateful for TouCan Ventures for the funding of this borehole and for another village in Moyo District in a similar situation. Selecting villages for boreholes is very difficult as there are a large number of villages in our Moyo District and nearby Yumbe District which have NO access to clean water. As mentioned in our last newsletter, we are seeking to add 22 to the 23 we have put in since 2014. Would you consider helping us in this?

While we were waiting for a friend to arrive, we were able to interact and get to know some of the community members. During this time we gave some reading materials, in this case, in Aringa–some New Testaments and other Christian literature translated from English to Aringa by our friend, Onduga Charles. I am very grateful that Charles was able to join us as my interpreter in Aringa. Charles can (usually) pick my English as well as pick my heart and spirit and can explain what I am saying in a way that reflects my heart and meaning. We have been working together since 2014 and he has interpreted in Christian-Muslim Dialogs and Open air preaching in the markets on market days.
RAU is truly grateful for all those whose hearts are touched to give for this particular project. One young man stood up at the end and asked, on behalf of 70 or so other villages, if they have received such a gift, could this gift also not be given to their brothers and sisters in the other places. How we wish we could! May the Lord grant it to be so!

On a personal note we recently had a scare.  Our 5 year granddaughter was airlifted by helicopter to the Cooks Children’s Hospital February 6th! She started to have a hard time breathing and her parents took her to the local hospital and, then,almost immediately taken to Ft. Worth. Her oxygen level was very very low. It appears there was some kind of infection in her lungs. She is back home now and doing well, praise God!  Also, our granddaughter (oldest) was found to have a bone cyst in her finger which requires surgery and a bone graft. She is 10 years old. It is so hard for us to be away from them, especially when things go awry, and we are not to be able to support them in times of trouble. Carol and I pray daily for our family. We request your prayers for us and them that our trust would remain in the Lord! Thank  you very much!

The greatest evil is having the gospel and not doing everything within our power to get it to those who do not have it!

Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!

When at least 35% of the world; “the unoccupied fields”, have no access to the gospel, we (believers) must all do all we can to reach them. We who are saved owe the gospel to every lost person, most especially the 2.4 billion who will not hear unless someone breaks into their “unoccupied field” with no thought of their own life!

Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!

I am sure that none of us will say when in heaven that we prayed too much, we sacrificed too much, proclaimed the gospel too much, and were too passionate to get the gospel to those who have little to no access to this gospel of grace. Let us together press on to make it our  ambition to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named!

Our goal in our gospel witness is to take our eyes off the “risk” and place them on the cause for the risk. When God compels us like this he often will not tell us the risks…after all there are no risks for the all-knowing, all-powerful God. So let us be AMBITIOUS (Romans 15:20) to see that ALL are reached with the gospel of grace (Romans 1:16) in ALL places…there are no closed doors to the gospel, just some which are more difficult to go through!

Living as Exiles, Longing for HOME

When I was a teenager, like other youngsters (I’m sure) I had imaginations about an idyllic future which included a small house with a white picket fence around it and a sense of permanence and family belonging. At the same time, having grown up in a Christian home, familiar with Scripture’s predictions and admonitions about end times and the “imminent return” of Christ, I secretly prayed that Jesus would at least wait until my idyllic future materialized before He whisked me (and us) away. “Please, Lord, let me, at least, experience some of the joys of this world.” My plans were firmly planted on earth. There wasn’t anything grander in my mind than living a happy, family-oriented life. The beauty and glory of heaven weren’t in my sights, let alone the permanence of eternity, with God, Himself, as my greatest joy and treasure. In terms of futuristic thinking, I could only see the horizon of “my best life now.“

Down the road a few decades, the horizon has changed along with my definition of “ideal“. Reality looks different than the dream of my “house with a white picket fence“. Mingled together with many happy experiences and wonderful memories of the family with whom God blessed me and the community within which I was nurtured have also been tears of painful separations and goodbyes, loneliness, empty-nest, stresses of forging community in a new culture, the weariness of hard work, seeing death up close, being confronted by the depth of my sin nature, disappointment in myself and others, relational difficulties, physical pain and signs of aging and general decline. This inextricable jumble of pleasure and pain has awakened me. God has used earthly trials and disappointments to shake my hopes loose from uncertain temporal happiness, constraining me to look for true joy and a home that endures. Never before have I longed this much for heaven.

Is my longing for heaven mere escapism –“the avoidance of reality by absorption of the mind in entertainment or in an imaginative situation or activity” (Dictionary.com)? Unequivocally, NO! The Lord has awakened me from reverie to reality–pain has spoken loudly, but God’s voice through His word, even more loudly! My longings have been transformed by the renewing of my thinking and values–through messages from faithful proclaimers and, primarily, through God’s word. I do not want to escape FROM something, but, rather, to be rescued FROM exile in a broken world TO a HOME beyond compare! I WANT to go HOME!

In a wonderful podcast message by Jen Pollock Michel ( https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tgc-podcast/id270128470?i=1000426258922 ) called, “Searching For The Story of Home,” Jen speaks on point about the deepest longings of our hearts being a homesickness, a yearning for a home that was lost and which restoration will only be realized through Christ. She portrays our human story in four Acts: Creation, Fall, Redemption and Restoration.

Act 1: Creation as God’s gift of Home to humanity, where He Himself comes to dwell with His children in the Garden. God is a Homemaker, providing comfort, rest, community and shelter–and the wonder of knowing and being known and loved.

Act 2:The Fall–everything splinters as God’s people reject His rule, His provision and seek their own version of home. Adam and Eve are exiled from the Garden. Community and communion is broken–between people and God, and between people, themselves. This is a long story of exile and grief in a broken world which is awaiting a Savior who will come to bind the broken-hearted and bring them home.

Act 3: Jesus leaves His home and enters into our exile and our homesickness. “The Word became flesh and ‘pitched his tent’ (tabernacled) with us (John 1:14). He took on our forsakenness so we could be reclaimed. In John 14:23, Jesus says, “I go to prepare a place for you…” God has not given up on a vandalized world but, through Christ, makes a way for us to be reconciled with God and find our way out of exile to our new forever home.

Act 4: Jesus will return and take us to the Home he has prepared for us. Some of us have had a good story of home in this life. Many have not. Whether good or bad, our stories of home here on earth are not ultimate or lasting. God has made a way, if we believe it and accept it, for us, once again, to dwell with Him in rest and safety and community and in communion with Him. In God, our homesickness IS and WILL BE healed.

We, Christians, believe in the absolute reality of this story, but we do not often live as if we do. I cannot state it better than Jon Bloom in his article, Live Homeless, Homesick and Free. “The reason “home” always eludes you now is that you were made for another world. No worldly experience can satisfy your inconsolable longing. No relationship, no successful achievement, no possession, no amount of public approval will ever satisfy you here. The best these can do is give you a brief copy and shadowy glimpse of your true homeland. The best they can do is make you homesick for the better country where you belong, yet have never seen...The really good news is that you are a stranger and exile. The more you realize this, the more it allows you to travel light. It’s the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches that weigh you down and choke your faith (Matthew 13:22). But remembering that you don’t have to make your home here will lighten your load and open your spiritual airways.…Don’t waste precious time and resources trying to make earth your home. Instead, travel as light in your expectations and your possessions (material or emotional) as possible. And seek to take as many people as you can with you to your true homeland.“

For Jacob and me, to live where we are living and to do what we are doing has been to grapple with these longings and to make plans to “travel light in our expectations and possessions” in this life as we travel HOME to “a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” (1 Peter 1:4). Every newsletter or blogpost also reflects our desire for you to join us in the journey, our hope that you would travel light and aim all your treasures at heaven’s purposes–to invest heavily in what is weighty in glory and goodness. It is not as important to us that you invest in Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) as it is that you invest in eternity in some fashion or form. If every Christian would unburden themselves of living “heavy” in this life and free up their resources (time, money, relationships, belongings) for eternal purposes, there would be no lack in the Kingdom of God. We want you to see heaven clearly on your horizon and to live like you know it’s real and treasure it as better!

Here, we recount our investments–yours and ours. Here, also, are ways in which you can invest again–or even more–or for the first time. We are very grateful for all of you who have given to RAU. Please continue and increase if you can. If you are not a financial supporter of RAU, we earnestly ask that you, too, would consider supporting the mission and vision of Reaching Africa’s Unreached. 1. This new year, 2022, allowed us to resume our primary calling of Pastoral/Leadership training. It was a joyful thing! We were able to host 48 men here on campus (though some came from their homes each day). [The average cost which is invested into each attendee per module comes to approximately $50/person! This includes food and lodging and all the resources that are provided.] Pastor Jason Van Bemmel with Forest Hill Presbyterian (PCA) Church and Bob Brown with New Covenant Presbyterian (PCA) Church traveled safely with minor inconveniences from Maryland. Their efforts were no less than heroic–having travelled for 3 days and then getting up the day after they arrived to teach for 9 days in a row, all day and often into the evening! Their focus on this first of five modules was “Grounded in the Gospel“. This retreat was a blessing and encouragement to many.

Here is one story in particular:

“I am very grateful to the Lord who provided me with this unique opportunity to go and get this biblical training from Reaching Africa’s Unreached. I have never attended such a training where the teachers are so knowledgeable and are able to help the participants learn and understand everything like that. The detailed explanation of the topics caused my understanding to grow and helped me to begin doing things differently. I am now using the knowledge I got from the training to bring transformation into my family and the church of Christ. Before this training, I was the only person in my family who could lead prayers and everything in our evening devotion. My wife Salama being from a Muslim background would just come and sit to wait for me do everything but after this training, I got the skills to train others on how to lead devotion. I started implementing what I learnt with my own family and helped my wife on how to organize and lead family devotion. This time my wife is able to organize and lead family devotion, so I don’t have to worry when I am away from home these days. Our 3 years old daughter Bint Thomson Kezzy has also learnt a few words of prayer and always requests that she is given the chance to pray. We give her the chance to pray and then continue with the devotion. From this training I was able to learn skills of counseling others who have challenges. People with different challenges now come to me for counseling and I am able to encourage them with the word of God. Everyone in our community are now calling me with the title “pastor” which was not the case in the past.  So I really want to thank Reaching Africa’s Unreached under the leadership of Jacob and Carol Lee for thinking about strengthening the weak Church in West Nile more especially the church in Aringa through such powerful trainings to equip the young generation for effective leadership. This is the only way through which the weak church can be strengthened and this way it will become salt and light to the world.“

2. Renovations, though they don’t “look like ministry“, make every aspect of our primary calling easier and helpful so that when, down the road, visitors come or others take the step of joining us long term we are ready for them. Lydia’s House is getting its finishing touches as a residential building for a small family. The Pavilion is almost completed and will be a lovely area to host guests who come to see the Demo Farm and the other things that are happening at RAU. We have an amazing crew that keeps this place running smoothly and who are capable when things need ‘fixin‘!

3. Gospel resources continue to be sent out to strategic areas. They include Arabic and English Study Bibles, Arabic Christian literature and some English literature as well. Currently, RAU has focused on the Republic of Sudan and an Arabic Bible School in Kampala.

Some upcoming events and prayer needs:

1. On February 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 9th, Lanek Pollicap, with World Vision-Uganda, will be bringing groups of farmer/leaders from the nearby Refugee Settlements to our Demo Farm to learn about: Micro irrigation (drip irrigation)–thank you, M.A.R.S., Vegetable production (Box gardens), Soil and Water conservation, and Tree management. Approximately 680 farmers will come on 4 separate days. They will be divided into six different groups. On each of those days the groups will be divided into 3, Zakeo–box gardens/vegetable production, Paul–drip irrigation, and Jacob–Mango and soil management and the groups will rotate through each module. On the 7th and 9th there will be two groups each day. This will challenge us but we are trusting the Lord and our preparation to help us. Such opportunities always remind us of the generous support of M.A.R.S. (Missionary Agricultural Resource Services) and how they have stood with us these many years.
2. On February 20th- 26th, a teaching team from ABWE will arrive for the 2nd Module of RAU’s Pastoral/Leadership Training. They will present a chronological, Biblical theology of the Old Testament with a Good Soil curriculum called, ABWE’s “Roots of Faith: OT“ and certify all those attending to teach that course. One of the future modules will be the New Testament version of that same curriculum called, “Roots of Faith: NT“. Other future modules will be focused on the fundamentals of the faith and church leadership as well as basic economics and continued training in “Farming as a Business“.
3. Paul George, co-worker and friend, will leave for a few months, starting March 10, to take care of business at home and then return to serve with us. His presence and burden-bearing has been a blessing and encouragement to us and the whole RAU team as he maintains a servant’s heart, working in the gardens, teaching at churches and persevering in prayer.
4. On March 8th, Andrea (a young lady interested in Missions) will arrive with her cousin on a “come and see” visit. Pray that travel would be safe and that God’s calling, however that may look, would be confirmed in her heart.
5. The container full of ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles is en route and should be nearing the port of Mombasa, Kenya. From there it will make its way by truck to Kampala where it has to pass through the URA system for clearance before a truck brings it to RAU’s campus. Pray for its quick and safe delivery! Also on the way coming is Christian Book’s container with Christian Literature and hundred’s of thousands of dual-language tracts–Ma’di-English, Aringa-English and Arabic-English. Christian Book International Outreach has been a gracious partner of RAU by piggy-backing many of our resources in their containers.
6. Zorah (our staff member with a heart for children’s ministry) and his wife, Josiane ,welcomed “Keza Iffeni” into the world. She is precious–and she is a gift to us all. Please be praying for her. Josiane recently noticed a white glowing dot in her right eye and it appears to be a congenital cataract (rather than the more serious “retinoblastoma” which we were praying it would not be). The final diagnosis will be next week. Please be praying for all three of them. You can imagine the emotions that such news stirs in new parents’ hearts!
7. Please be in continual prayer for other families to be called to come alongside of RAU full time! In working partnership with ABWE, we have been encouraged by some possibilities. We long for faith to become sight in this endeavor!
8. Continue to consider contributing toward new boreholes for surrounding villages who are in dire need of clean, accessible water. Our new goal is to do 22 boreholes in 2022. Funding for 3 of them has already been given and one of the three boreholes is already complete (in our neighboring village of Afoji). This would bring the total number of boreholes placed in villages through RAU to 45!
9. Continue to pray for the pastors and leaders (as well as those who sense that calling) of this West Nile region, particularly in the Metu Mountains, Obongi, Yumbe and for those in the Refugee Settlements from both South Sudan and the Republic of (North) Sudan. Pray that the Lord would supply their needs according to His riches, that they would grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that they would be inspired and encouraged to keep up the good fight, persevering in tough places and circumstances.
10. Church Building projects in the Metu Mountains: generous donors through “With God” ministry, led by John and Angela Howarton, have provided the funding to completely finish out Ayaa Baptist Church in Ayaa, Metu Mountains. Transport of building materials is currently in process (no easy matter in the Metu mountains). Ayaa Baptist will serve as a training center for the churches nearby. We are also praying and asking for donors to give $15,000 to finish out the church in Gbari/Arapi so that it, too, may serve the churches on that end of the Metu Mountains as a training center.
11. Continue to pray for evangelism outreaches in markets and villages with the goal od seeing churches planted.
12. Pray that door would be open to resume Christian-Muslim dialogs in Yumbe with Imams and Sheikhs.

Jacob and I want to express our deep thanks for your prays and interest and for your financial investment in all the various ministries done through RAU. As you can see, the needs are great (and even bigger than what has been mentioned). Our goal in our gospel witness is to take our eyes off the “risk” and place them on the cause for the risk. When God compels us like this he often will not tell us the risks…after all there are no risks for the all-knowing, all-powerful God. So let us be AMBITIOUS (Romans 15:20) to see that ALL are reached with the gospel of grace (Romans 1:16) in ALL places…there are no closed doors to the gospel, just some which are more difficult to go through!

By God’s grace we are ready for 2022

We are standing on the edge of a new season—one for which we have longed and prayed fervently! Our first retreat after the COVID shutdown is about to begin. We were holding on to our expectations a bit loosely as a huge part of moving forward depended on the USA teaching team (Jason Van Bemmel and Bob Brown from Maryland) being able to make their flights without any hindrances. We are THRILLED to learn this morning that they landed safely in Entebbe and are now on their way to RAU via van!  Our hope is that they may be able to catch up a bit on their sleep before they have to hit the ground running tomorrow morning when the first of 5 Module retreats for 2022 revs up!

Much like the experience of so many, the last two years of COVID disruption have challenged us and also grown us—personally and ministry-wise.  Every bit of “normalcy” is all the more appreciated after the long period of restrictions and inconveniences.  We praise the Lord for this!
Looking forward, our calendar is filling up again with many wonderful events. As mentioned above, our plan A is to have 5 Modular Retreats for our Church leaders from the Moyo area, Yumbe, Obongi and the Sudanese Refugee settlements. The hope is that we can get the 45 leaders who will be in attendance through all 5 Modules this coming year and not to stretch it out over too long of a period. The Retreats will include Biblical teaching as well as Agriculture and Economics/Business.

 RAU – Module 1 – Gospel Basics – Detailed Overview
Helping Without Hurting in Africa will be the main business text we will be using. We want to be ones who help without hurting.

E.D. Burns in his book The Missionary-Theologian: Sent into the World, Sanctified by the Word wisely states: “The implications of this story (“The Rich Man and Lazarus” Luke 16:19-31) are staggering. If people do not have eyes to see the glory of God and ears to hear the truth of God in the Bible, they will not be convinced of the gospel no matter how many amazing and awe-inspiring works they might witness, even the raising of a known villager from the dead. Feeding them, rescuing them, providing jobs for them, ‘loving on’ them, and any other methodology emphasized over and against the sufficiency of the Word of God, will not finally deliver them from the dominion of darkness into the kingdom of light. Now, some will object that this is callously calling for neglecting the legitimate holistic needs of suffering people. However, supplying the Word of God as the forefront emphasis of our ministries does not rule out other ministries of compassion and mercy; it just prioritizes and puts ministries of works and ministries of the Word in their proper place.”

The box gardens are ready for demonstration and the grounds of the campus have been cleaned and made ready for our visitors.

Additionally, RAU is working very diligently toward the goal of clean, accessible water for surrounding villages in the Moyo District, as well as a special project for the hospital where there is still no reliable running water, especially in the surgical theater and the maternity ward. As per now, patients/family members have to daily bring a jerry can of water with them for their own needs and the water needs for the hospital.  This is a heavy burden and RAU would love to help lift that burden.
Included in our goals/plans for 2022 is discipleship and evangelism in the Metu Mountains, and in Yumbe and Obongi Districts.  There is a great need for consistent encouragement and teaching/equipping in these areas. COVID really disorganized many churches and the effects of not meeting together seriously undermined their progress. We are praying fervently (with tears) that the Lord of the harvest would thrust forth laborers into the harvest fields. There is more work than can effectively be done by those on the ground here.  Jacob also prays and longs for the recommencing of the Christian-Muslim dialogs in Yumbe District.  At least, he has been able to have some heartening interactions via email with one Sheikh/Imam and we are hoping to receive him here for a visit after the retreat.
Jacob and I are keenly aware that many groups are asking for that “year-end” gift.We also ask for your consideration in partnering with us in  the ministry needs for this coming year. Just this morning, we were praising the Lord for the many donors who have been faithful and generous up to this very day. That is a huge encouragement to us and our way of seeing that “where God guides, He provides.” Thank you so very much for your love, and prayers and gifts. Our commitment to our donors is that we will be faithful to use the money wisely, effectively and with an understanding that so many of you are giving sacrificially. While we dearly missed our beloved family during another Christmas season, Jacob and I are blessed and thankful that we had wonderful slots of time with each one of our children and their spouses and all the grandchildren in 2021. Though we cannot always be near them, we have the privilege of lifting them up in prayer each day, interceding for their good in God. We love them all so much and are proud of each one!

Carol and I are long overdue with an update on our return to Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU). We have now been in Uganda a little over a month. Thank you for all your prayers! It has been a grand blessing to have Paul George with us. His love for Jesus, compassion and work ethic are evident to all!

During our first week in Uganda, we stayed in Entebbe at Carpe Diem, our all time favorite Guest House, which overlooks Lake Victoria. It was necessary to extend our stay there beyond our usual in order to take care of business items in Kampala, which included getting our renewed Ugandan three-year work visas in our passports. We looked for and found a tractor, a 45hp Kubota 4-wheel L4508 Diesel Tractor, a 2 disc plow, a front loader, and a specially crafted man-lift attachment for the bucket to allow access to all points on RAU’s 640 grafted mangoes. Our faithful  1976 Ford 360,which came in our first container in 2013, was a great blessing in clearing  the land and the progress made on it but it was time for its retirement. We are grateful for those who contributed to make this purchase of the Kubota possible. This tractor will be a blessing for RAU’s 20-acre demonstration farm.  We are grateful for those who contributed to make this purchase possible.  Fortunately, we finished the most important activities the day before several bombs went off in Kampala. On that fateful day, when we heard the news of the bombs, all plans for the day were quickly cancelled.  Such bombings have been more frequent. Please pray for our beloved Uganda!

The three of us (Carol, Paul, and myself) made it from Austin Texas (Nov.10) to Entebbe airport  with 25 tubs full of supplies/resources ,one box, 4 suitcases and 6 carry-on bags. At about 1:30 a.m. (Nov.11), all three of us were able to get to bed at Carpe Diem. We are grateful for our Lifegate Church friends who helped get all the tubs to the Austin airport and also helped unload them and carry them to the check-in line for us! We have been shown so much love!!!!  The story at Austin airport was wild…we almost did not make our flight because our COVID test was not correct…it was a PCR but did not have those 3 letters on the document. STILL!! GOD made a way for us through a COVID testing station near the airport. The results arrived on our phones just in the nick of time!! In Entebbe airport, after our repeat COVID tests, we picked ALL our luggage…none were missing. At Ugandan customs, from my interactions with the officials, I found out that they were Christians. I shared with them what we are doing and prayed for them. A few days later we sent all our boxes and bags up to RAU via bus and they arrived safely before we did. When you look at the process of traveling with all that luggage and then see everything turn out well, you KNOW that many miracles have happened!! We are grateful for those who prayed for our journey. Thank you! 

Soon after our return, we sent on their way to various locations a total of 30 “large Proclaimers”. These are native language audio Bibles put out by “Faith Comes by Hearing” and were donated to RAU by Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas. The ones in Arabic are on their way to the Republic of (North) Sudan. The Ma’di ones are in the hands of Moyo church leaders, primarily the Metu Mountain pastors and the other third are in Yumbe Districts in village churches. These are ideal in these locations as many do not have Bibles and/or cannot read. We have encouraged them to gather together throughout the week to listen to the Word of God. Here is a YouTube video demonstration I did with Pastor Tobious in Ayaa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrZcB4UiUCw&t=1s  In addition, twenty Kindle Fires with mobile solar chargers, via “Study to Be Approved“, loaded with Arabic resources, two Arabic Bibles, “Jesus” film in Arabic along ESV Study Bibles, Christian Books in Arabic, and gospel tracts have been placed into the hands of (North) Sudanese church leaders. 

On Saturday, December 4th, Carol, Paul, Henry, and I were in Yumbe for a Youth Seminar which Reaching Africa’s Unreached Yumbe coordinator, Onduga Charles, organized for us at Pilgrim Church. The Aringa Christian youth who attended are on fire for Jesus in this largely Muslim populated town and district. Our goal was to encourage them and connect their passion in evangelism with a full orbed view of the gospel message. We also wanted to equip them with an ESV Global Study Bible, dual language Aringa-English gospel tracts especially written for Muslims, a New City Devotional Catechism, and “The Message of Hope“ put out by ABWE Good Soil. “The Message of Hope“ is an excellent chronological study of the scriptures. Our dear brother, Onduga Charles, has translated the tracts and the “Message of Hope” into Aringa. I ran out of tracts and “Message of Hope”. Ten thousand each of the 600,000 six dual language tracts printed (the rest will come in another container)  are on their way and 1,000 of the “Message of Hope” in Aringa have been printed in Kampala through World Gospel Mission’s “Print Shop” and soon will be at Reaching Africa’s Unreached! The “Print Shop” has also printed 100 copies of  Helping Without Hurting In Africa participant’s manual which we will be using in our pastoral modules in the Hall of Tyrannus.   My heart was bubbling with joy to be back in Yumbe. Jesus is building his church in Yumbe among the Aringa!

Great news! The 20,841 ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles are in their container, somewhere between the USA and the port of Mombasa, Kenya. In Christian Book Distributor’s container, which is also on it’s way, are our dual language gospel tracts and books for pastoral modules. Once in Mombasa Kenya they will make their way via land transport to Kampala and then to RAU. Lord willing, sometime in February, the container with the Bibles will be resting on the slab ready made for the container. We just purchased an empty container in country and it was set in place on December 11th. This container will be used for the 600,000 dual language gospel tracts and many other books for use in pastoral training.  Check out our new page on the website to read RAU’s new “Dual Language Tracts” here. I am very grateful for Doug Salser and Literature Ministries International for the printing of these tracts. In our area they are effective tools in sharing the gospel. Gospel tracts beautifully done, such as these, are read by multiple people. The local photos and color draw people’s eyes to read. With many wanting to learn English more proficiently these dual language tracts are like honey.

I am excited to announce that church leadership retreats will be beginning soon, The fist module is scheduled for December 31–January 8th.  Pastor Jason Van Bemmel and Bob Brown have dedicated these two week out of their busy lives to join us in our primary ministry of  RAU which is Pastoral Leadership training.  Our goal is to have 5 Modules (10 days each) in 5 Retreats which can be completed in one year. We have found that spreading it over too long a period of time causes us to lose students due to life circumstances. The Biblical Curriculum courses are the basics of the Christian faith which leaders need to understand and to be able to effectively teach (AKA 2 Timothy 2:2).  Each of the five retreats will include  Agricultural training “in the field“. Basics in Economics and Business will also be taught using Helping Without Hurting In Africa and Richest Man in Babylon. The 10-day retreats are long and intense, but I believe it will accomplish our desired goal more effectively.

RAU’s 20-acre Demo Farm continues to operate, although COVID prevented any large groups from benefitting in 2020 & 2021. RAU is grateful for the continuing support of Missionary Agricultural Resource Services: M.A.R.S. in these efforts.  As pandemic restrictions lift and schools start up again, we look forward to offering hands-on training to community farmers and school groups in addition to the pastors and leaders who will attend the retreats. Our emphasis will be on box gardens/Kitchen gardens (of which we have 18) and grafted mangoes (and other fruit trees). The goal is to inspire entrepreneurial thinking and a “Farming as a Business” mindset in addition to improving farming skills in general.  There are several juicing plants starting up nearby, so if we can encourage the community members to grow grafted mangoes, it can become a source of income for them and our local community.  Paul George has enjoyed being a part of the “Garden Gang” headed up by Zakeo, RAU’s Agricultural Production Officer.  You can see him in the mornings and evenings helping to nurse the young seedlings along. He has been a tremendous encouragement to Zakeo and to all of us as well. (Paul has also been “sowing the seed” of the Word of God next in our neighboring  church, teaching at a Youth conference).

Along with our Biblical/Agriculture training ,evangelism and discipleship in 2022 we at Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) are trusting the Lord to put in more boreholes (water wells) in Moyo District. The District and RAU are looking at 20 of the most needy villages in Moyo Sub-County and Metu Sub-County. Yes…twenty!  RAU, by God’s grace, through our loving partners and a “boots on the ground” approach, has put in 22 boreholes since our move here 2013. We are confident of being able to translate your love gifts into clean and accessible water for many more in Moyo district! This is one of the best ways to physically show the love of Jesus. As the old saying goes, people do not care about how much you know until they know how much you care. Our first push, in concert with Moyo District Water Board, would be a borehole near our Moyo Regional Hospital which would help meet the hygiene needs in the Maternity Ward and Surgical theater. The water would be pumped to a tank which would serve just these two sections of the hospital. The Apostle Paul states that we (Christ’s disciples) are redeemed and purified to BE ZEALOUS for good works! (Titus 2:14). Praying that your zeal would be real!! Since August of 2020, RAU has established a relationship with ABWE which has continued to develop towards a working partnership. We share with this Missionary Sending Agency a firm belief in the primacy of the local church in missions and in the discipleship of church leaders. We both envision coming alongside what God is already doing in sub-Saharan Africa–the region of the fastest growing church in the world.

• 20 Boreholes in 2022, with the first one being for the Moyo Regional Hospital. Currently, the doctors and medical personnel must rely on water brought by jerry-cans by families of patients (from unknown sources) for the hygiene necessary for their work. From survey work to hand pump the cost for one borehole is $8000. The one for the Moyo Hospital will be more as it requires a production pump. If you cannot help, please reach out to others who may be able to help us provide clean water in these very needy places.
• Funds for basic medical supplies for our local Moyo Hospital. RAU would work in concert with the Hospital Administrator and a missionary surgeon.
• Educational sponsorships. This requires people who are committed for the long term, to see a child or adult through their program. We have ones who need help in Primary, Secondary, Polytech, Nursing, University, and graduate levels.

Our extended stay in America  is soon coming to end. Carol and I have tickets to leave Austin,Texas for Entebbe Uganda on November 9th.  We have a long time friend, Paul George, who will be traveling back with us. Paul has been a faithful supporter of Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) since we left for our new home located on the Ugandan/South Sudan border in 2013. He has been to RAU once in the past. Now that he is “retired” he wants to spend a number of months with us each year. I know Paul will be a great blessing  to the people of our area as well as to Carol and me.

I have some updates since my last report to you on September 30th. First, please pray for RAU’s 20,841 ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles to be loaded in their container and put on the ship and also the container for Christian Book. Christian Book’s container is carrying a good number of resources  for us, as I mentioned in the Sept. 30th newsletter, as well as for other ministries in Uganda. Both containers should have left by now but the backlog at the port is holding up their departure. Thank you!

In the Sept. 30th newsletter, I had requested prayers and donations for a tractor and funds to do another borehole. Praise God, within a couple days, funds were given for these two needs. Praise God for his grace and the love of his people!  After contacting our local elected village leader about us being able to do another borehole, RAU received from the Moyo District Water Board a letter of appreciation for the 22 boreholes (water wells) RAU has completed in the District. In their letter they also highlighted 13 other villages in need of a borehole so they also would have greater access to clean water. Pray with us on this as it would be a big undertaking.

The video below entitled, “Water for Gwere”, is one of the recent boreholes we were able to complete. At the filming of this video, little did I know that the Lord through his people would enable us to do more wells than what we were believing for at the time. Isn’t it just like the Lord to do over and above what we ask for?

Since my last writing, Carol and I were able to attend  two events to which ABWE had invited us. We received training and certification in a portion of their Good Soil Evangelism and Discipleship curriculum and attended their 24-hour Demo Day. They were gracious to Carol and me, allowing us to make a short presentation in the Africa breakout sessions. We met many like minded brothers and sisters interested in long term missions at this missionary recruitment event. The Good Soil curriculum is something we want to be using more and more in RAU’s evangelism and discipleship.

We are currently working with Good Soil and our Madi, Aringa, and Sudanese brothers on the ground, getting some of their materials translated into Madi, Aringa and Sudanese Arabic. Carol and I are hoping for a closer and closer partnership with ABWE. Please pray as both ABWE and RAU seek wisdom and direction in this. Thank you!

At this time it looks like Uganda’s lockdown is ending. Lord willing, we will start up again with our module training in the Hall of Tyrannus at the end of the year. We have been praying for this! RAU’s main mission and vision as an organization is to walk alongside local churches, fulfilling 2 Timothy 2:2. Along with teaching of the fundamentals of the faith we also give instruction in sound economic practices and hands-on “Farming as a Business” training. Of course, COVID-19 put a big damper on all those desired plans.

During our Stateside visit we have been in 13 churches and in seven states. We are so grateful for the many opportunities we have had to reconnect with so many friends and  for the new friendships which have been made. We are sorry if we were not able to see all of you. Hopefully, on our next trip we will be able to do so. Our greatest joy was to have extended time with our family! We recently heard the good news that grandbaby number NINE is on the way and due in May. This will be Anna and Kenny’s number three. We look forward to meeting this precious gift later in 2022 on our next visit to the States. Please be in prayer for this sweet little one.

In the midst of our travels I have been able to work through some great books. My favorites have been  E.D. Burns’ two books,  The Missionary–Theologian: Sent into the World, Sanctified by the Word  and The Transcultural Gospel…oh my! what great reads!  I am in my second reading of them and will do a third reading. Another book that has “hit me straight between the eyes” with its scriptural exhortations is the small book, Humbled:Welcoming the Uncomfortable Work of God by David Mathis. Currently, I am also working through Gospel Privilege:The Unearned Advantage that is Meant for Everyone by  David Joannes. I highly recommend each one of these to you! Read, read and read some more! :-).

The greatest evil is having the gospel and not doing everything within our power to get it to those who do not have it!

Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!

When at least 35% of the world; “the unoccupied fields”, have no access to the gospel, we (believers) must all do all we can to reach them. We who are saved owe the gospel to every lost person, most especially the 2.4 billion who will not hear unless someone breaks into their “unoccupied field” with no thought of their own life!

I am sure that none of us will say when in heaven that we prayed too much, we sacrificed too much, proclaimed the gospel too much, and were too passionate to get the gospel to those who have little to no access to this gospel of grace. Let us together press on to make it our  ambition to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named! 

Our goal in our gospel witness is to take our eyes off the “risk” and place them on the cause for the risk. When God compels us like this he often will not tell us the risks…after all there are no risks for the all-knowing, all-powerful God. So let us be AMBITIOUS (Romans 15:20) to see that ALL are reached with the gospel of grace (Romans 1:16) in ALL places…there are no closed doors to the gospel, just some which are more difficult to go through!
