There Is No Plan B with God!

Carol and I want to give you a personal update on our travel plans, which have changed again due to the Ebola situation in our region. Thank you so much for your prayers; we deeply desire that you continue to pray for us. Please pray for Uganda, South Sudan, and especially the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As noted in previous email reports, we are actively seeking to walk in “Prudence and Prayer” and are following all of Uganda’s protocols. We are also assisting the local government with certain necessary physical supplies.

Oswald Chambers says, in one of his works, that prayer is the greater work, not just preparation for it. And “God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart”(attributed to Charles Spurgeon). We agree wholeheartedly with this! Carol, our team at Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU), and I earnestly request your continued prayers for us here in Northwestern Uganda. The good news is that Uganda has reported no Ebola cases since mid-June. The Ugandan Minister of Health recently declared Uganda Ebola-free due to the absence of new cases since mid June. In my opinion, Uganda has the best protocols in East Africa to prevent Ebola’s spread. However, this is not the case in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We’re at RAU which is only a couple of hours from the DRC’s very porous border. The Ebola-affected provinces are in Eastern DRC with most outbreaks in Ituri Province. It would be difficult for any nation to prevent this virus from crossing man-made borders. Pray that Uganda remains strong in its containment measures and that God’s will be done to stop the virus’s movement into Uganda. In the map below, you can see the eastern tip of Ituri Province in Congo. RAU is near the blue dot on the map. This is also where Uganda, the DRC, and South Sudan converge.

This week we  pushed our flights for a short furlough forward to November 16th. This would allow us to spend the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with our children, their spouses, our 10 grandchildren, friends, and our home church Lifegate. We hope to visit our supporting churches as well as newer churches through early next year. Carol and I also need some rest. Originally, our tickets were for July 3rd, then August 12th, and now November 16th but we are holding that date loosely. Currently, there’s a 21-day quarantine required for Americans who have been in the DRC before entering America. Recently those serving in the DRC with Samaritan’s Purse were sent to Kenya for their 21 day quarantine upon leaving the DRC. Currently, Canada requires a 21-day quarantine for all those coming from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.  Americans returning from Uganda and South Sudan must undergo special screenings at designated American airports. If Ebola continues to spread and breaks into Uganda, Carol and I do not want to leave our Ugandan and Sudanese teams to deal with this alone. Our teams are like family; we need to stand with them if Ebola breaks through the border into Uganda. We love our Ugandan and Sudanese brothers and sisters in Christ! Also we would not want to endanger loved ones and friends in America.

Please pray for our young Congolese friend, Misengile Samuel, and his family. He stayed with us for training for about a year and a half but has since returned to Congo. I’ve been chatting with him via WhatsApp; he mentioned that Ebola is in his village with little they can do physically.

Sam’s “on the ground report” and the one below from a missionary working in the DRC shed light on the often conflicting reports in the Western mainstream media.

An observation from a  missionary working in the Democratic Republic of Congo“My guess is 20,000 to 30,000 will be dead from Ebola by January without massive additional funding and response scale-up (recently citing a $1.4 billion need). That aid won’t come.1,354 people are dead here now from Ebola. 3,075 have been diagnosed. The WHO says the true scale of infected people could be 2 to 4 times higher than official figures. 6,000 to 12,000 people may already be infected and not yet tested. At a 46-52% fatality rate, that hidden pool alone will produce thousands more deaths. The average daily growth rate of deaths is 4.4%. That trajectory reaches roughly 19,000 dead by late September and 76,000 by the end of the year. Many people tune out when they read big numbers. Sorry. That is just the math of the current rate of daily increases in deaths: 4.4%/day. Actually, there are 15 reasons those numbers could be cut down. No Ebola virus has killed so many so fast. Ebola outbreaks usually “die out” or slow due to “depletion of susceptibles,” and intervention comes in. Unfortunately, no real effective intervention, vaccine, or cure is coming. The first Bundibugyo-specific vaccine candidate is months to a year-plus from mattering at scale. Nothing coming will change the rate of deaths in the next two to three months. The WHO and CDC have produced low estimates based on optimistic forecasts of key drivers like isolation and contact tracing. But community resistance, attacks on treatment centers, health-worker strikes for lack of pay, and four separate wars drive the trajectory towards higher numbers. Here in Beni, we hear Congolese say, or it is reported they say: “There is no such thing as Ebola,” “You only get ebola when they inject you at the hospital,” “If you go to an Ebola centre, you will die.” People here have stoned a nurse to death, beaten guards and hospital workers and burned or looted treatment centers just to retrieve infected dead bodies for traditional burial. 121 health workers are infected in Ituri alone, and 36 have died. Only 15% of planned infection-control triage units are functional. The international community far underestimated the resistance to treatment and far overestimated the impact of interventions under the control of the DRC government. Pray for a miracle.” This is from the CDC:The response to this outbreak is challenging due to several complex circumstances in the region: 1)Limited health infrastructure, including limited access to healthcare, diagnostic and laboratory services, infection prevention and control supplies, and other basic services make stopping this outbreak more difficult.2)Ongoing conflict in the area where the outbreak is occurring creates security issues and complicates contact tracing and infection prevention and control.3)Violence against healthcare workers and shortages of personal protective equipment are leading to healthcare workers becoming infected while treating patients.4)Frequent population movement and cross-border travel increase the risk of spread to Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and to other areas.5)Lack of trust in the government and misinformation make communicating about Ebola more difficult.”

In other ministry news, things have been moving along here at RAU. We’re starting the paintwork at a Arapi-Gbari Metu Mountain church which was planted in 2015. Initially, they met under a tree, then under tarps, and eventually under a tent. Now the building, including the roof and plaster work, is complete. The toilets have been upgraded, and the pastor’s living quarters improved. Our team is currently painting there right now. Praise God for that! Our hope and prayer is that this church becomes a training center for smaller nearby Metu Mountain churches.

The paint work has begun

We’ve also distributed lots of Bibles— Africa Study Bibles, ESV Global Study Bibles, Arabic Study Bibles, Arabic Bibles, and ESV Outreach Bibles as well as theological books to church leaders and congregations in Uganda  and refugee resettlement camps like Bidi Bidi. These resources have also reached South Sudanese pastors and refugees from North Sudan staying in South Sudan and  many have gone to the Nuba Mountains in the Republic of (North) Sudan. We praise God and those who have given so that we can distribute these important materials. Jesus said He is building His church. What a joy to co-labor with Jesus and those who stand with us! Praise God, more resources are on the way: another 700 Arabic  Bibles and solid Christian resource books.

Also encouraging is the land title has been granted for our “RAU Yumbe On The Ground Branch”. This opens up further development opportunities there, including building a facility where we hope RAU ABWE missionaries will live and serve.

These are the Bibles going out

Please keep praying for Carol and me as we push forward. I am nearing 71, and Carol isn’t far behind me. We continue to pray for God to bring more missionaries to join us and  local churches in proclaiming the gospel of grace combined with being zealous for deeds of mercy. You can check out the Uganda opportunities on the ABWE site, where we have five spots open for long-term missionaries. We’re in good communication with ABWE about ministry teams and local church teaching teams visiting us. We are also grateful for the church teams which come our way.

Thank you for standing with us, for taking an interest in, and for partnering with us in all we seek to do!

Aringa Sheikh
Dear Friends of Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU)! I hope you are well!

This is an update/opportunity which arose shortly after Carol and I sent out our last newsletter on July 14th entitle “July Headlines.” One of RAU’s priorities from the beginning has been distributing Study Bibles, Bibles, and sound biblical books to church leaders, church members, students, and evangelism efforts. The LORD has opened the door to a number of Christian book printers and distributors. One of those faithful partners for a good number of years has been  Global Christian Book Fund (GCBF) formerly CBIOGCBF has changed locations to Dover, NH. RAU is blessed to have such an enduring relationship with GCBF and their team. We have received numerous books and Bibles at greatly discounted prices (compare prices at retailers) and have been able to ship these materials, that ride in their containers they send to Uganda each year.

Here is our opportunity with GCBF: To secure these prices we must order a minimum of 500 of each item.

Hardback  NLT Pew Bible: $4.50 per Bible; 500= $2,250.00

Total for materials: $11,475.00.

If funds exceed this amount, we will use the remainder for shipping and handling costs from Dover, NH, to Kampala and then north to RAU.  And  if that is covered we would order additional #’s of materials.

Donation instructions are on our website. Make notation: Books and Bibles- https://reachingafricasunreached.org/donations/

Would you consider helping us get these resources to RAU? We commit to being faithful and prudent in their distribution.

July Headlines

By Carol Lee

The view from the Gbari/Arapi Community Church. Photos below of the church building progress.

“You can make many plans,
but the LORD’s purpose will prevail.” (Proverbs 19: 21)

We have had an unusual year of ministry at RAU (last October to present). As we wrote about in previous newsletters, renovation of homes took priority in prepping for future families to join us. We had two couples join us for short term stints (Andre and Emily Solomos and Wayne and Nancy Reigel) and, most thankfully, the Langworthy’s joined us full-time! What a blessing! This season of ministry has been a combination of the necessarily mundane, the encouraging growth in family, and outreach.

Here are some happenings since the last newsletter:

  • Continued distribution of Study Bibles (Africa Study Bible, Arabic Study Bibles (Van Dyke translation), ESV Global Study Bible, ESV Pew Outreach Bible, Arabic Bibles, and theological books to Pastors, Leaders and Congregants. Onette Zorah and Tiondi Patrick have been a tremendous help in overseeing that aspect of RAU’s ministry as there is a constant flow of these resources to leaders and students in Uganda, South Sudan and the Refugee Settlements within Uganda which is home to Sudanese from South Sudan and the Republic of (North) Sudan. We have also been sending them into South Sudan and the Republic of Sudan Nuba Mountain area. In addition to the resources that have been shipped here, we have the dual language booklets that we have had printed here in Uganda through Ekisinga Publishing in Jinja, Uganda–The Message of Hope–in English and Aringa.
  • Most of the photos below are from RAU partner, Joshua Abraham Rawi, a MBB (Muslim Background Believer) from Darfur Sudan who has been displaced into Uganda due to persecution and civil unrest. He is a living example of walking out 2 Timothy 2:2 which is RAU’s theme verse. His story and the beginning of our relationship with him in ministry is highlighted in ABWE’s Message Magazine entitled “The Man Whom Dreamed of Jesus”
  • The near completion of the Gbari/Arapi Community Church building–long awaited for 11 years!! All that is lacking is the paint and it will stand as (a building on a hill) a testament to God’s kind provision and the perseverance, prayer and kindness of donors. The plan is that this building will not only serve the local church, but also be a gathering place for teaching/discipleship for other churches in nearby villages. The church building is large and has the capacity to hold many. The tent in which the church was meeting (donated by RAU) is dilapidated and torn, no longer offering much relief from sun and rain so funding for the completion of the building came in a timely way.
  • In the village of Ijujo a church was planted by Aya Baptist Church in 2006. For a long time, they met under a mango tree. Then, RAU was able to help them with a basic structure with metal roofing. Now, we would like to help them complete a much larger structure which was built by a community leader so that church members, who normally fill up their current building, will have a more spacious and protective place to meet–and GROW. Common statistics state that once a church reaches 80% of its seating capacity, growth is greatly slowed. Perhaps that is more apropos to western culture, but it’s also a practical fact–growth requires space!
  • The Land Title for the property in Yumbe has been received, meaning that construction plans for a Yumbe RAU on the grand branch can now safely begin. This was not an easy process as, in that district, land titles are rarely granted to Christians, or the application process is typically met with much resistance and delay. We praise the Lord for his affirming hand in the granting of this document. It is our great desire to come alongside our dear brothers and sisters in Yumbe District to herald and display the kindness of God in Christ through His saving work and to foster strong and vibrant leadership in the Church. This is a high priority for us! Please pray and, if you able, help us establish this key ministry spot. We have some money already set aside for this ministry project. Read about the details here: https://reachingafricasunreached.org/new-proposed-rau-yumbe-on-the-ground-branch/

No doubt, most of you are aware of the Ebola epidemic which has been rampant in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) for some months now. ReliefWeb on July 10th reports the following: “The seventeenth Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to evolve, with 1,792 confirmed cases, including 625 deaths and 295 recoveries, reported across 37 health zones in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu as of 8 July. The Government has also reported two confirmed cases in Kisangani, Tshopo Province. The outbreak is unfolding in an area marked by persistent insecurity and displacement due to armed clashes, limiting humanitarian access and complicating Ebola prevention, surveillance and response. Ituri remains the epicentre, accounting for 91 per cent of confirmed cases and nearly 86 per cent of deaths….In Uganda, the outbreak remains relatively contained, with 20 confirmed cases as of 9 July, including two deaths, 17 recoveries and one patient currently admitted for care.”

An American doctor with Samaritans Purse has contracted Ebola. Not long ago a French doctor did as well. It has now become the fastest growing outbreak of Ebola in the continent of Africa. Please pray!

Thankfully, our Moyo/Yumbe (Map below #’s 9&10) area has had no reports of Ebola, though there are potential entry sites to our west (DRC) and north (South Sudan which is two kilometers from us). Sadly, it has affected our plans to travel as initially intended (July 3rd) due to KLM shutting down flights into and out of Entebbe, Uganda. There are other airlines still flying so exiting is not impossible. However, at this time, we are holding our travel plans loosely. Please continue to pray for the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan. Pray that the Sovereign Lord would prohibit this disease from killing, stealing and destroying more precious lives in these regions.

The Ebola outbreak also affected some of the ministry plans we had for the rest of this year, including receiving a team from Forest Hill Presbyterian church for leadership trainings in Moyo, Yumbe and the nearby Refugee Settlements. We were also looking forward to hosting Hope Smiles Dental Group with an even larger team of dentists and assistants in November. That has been pushed back until March of 2027. Due to travel restrictions and guidelines for quarantine in some cases, other ministry plans have been temporarily postponed to later: a financial literacy course with Todd Skipper and Vic Doucet from Canada and leadership training with Peter Nance. Benjamin Emery and teaching team of 7-8 with North Broadway Church are looking to push their coming. Lord willing, we hopefully will be able to move them all to later dates which work for them and us.

Recently, I read a proverb which states, “People ruin their lives by their own foolishness
and then are angry at the LORD.”
(Proverbs 19:3) We are not ruled by fear, but we also do not want to be foolish. We take responsibility (as much as is in our power) for wise actions that protect us and others from suffering unnecessarily.
Jacob often likes to say: “We hope and pray for the best and at the same time plan for the worst”.

Please continue in prayer for us and our RAU Team in the following ways:

  • Safety for our team on the ground–here in Moyo and Kampala–during the Ebola outbreak; the halt of further spread of the disease and comfort for those who have suffered because of it
  • Continued growth of the team (spiritually, relationally, and in number); 5 new positions have been added to the ABWE website as serving opportunities with RAU. Pray for the Lord of the harvest to thrust forth laborers into the harvest fields (Matthew 9:38).
  • Growth of the Church in Uganda, South Sudan, and the Republic of Sudan in depth of knowledge and experience of the grace of the Lord; pray for strong leadership, grounded in and preaching the whole counsel of God.
  • Continued wisdom and grace in distribution of Study Bibles into leaders hands, Outreach Bibles, local language Bibles and Christ centered books.
  • Discipleship efforts in local churches.
  • Monthly financial support and financial support for projects mentioned above

Thank you for all the ways in which you participate in the ministry of RAU! Prayer — Giving — Encouragement — On the ground participation! The Lord uses it all to build His Church!

RAU Opportunities to Serve

Take a moment to investigate the substantial long-term opportunities available to serve with RAU/ABWE presented on this page. Our thoughts and prayers are devoted to those who feel a calling to serve at RAU for the long term. The needs are considerable, and the number of willing hands to assist is limited… Matthew 9:38.
