Settling Back In

Pastoral training soon to resume in the Hall of Tyrannus! PTL!

Carol and I are long overdue with an update on our return to Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU). We have now been in Uganda a little over a month. Thank you for all your prayers! It has been a grand blessing to have Paul George with us. His love for Jesus, compassion and work ethic are evident to all!

During our first week in Uganda, we stayed in Entebbe at Carpe Diem, our all time favorite Guest House, which overlooks Lake Victoria. It was necessary to extend our stay there beyond our usual in order to take care of business items in Kampala, which included getting our renewed Ugandan three-year work visas in our passports. We looked for and found a tractor, a 45hp Kubota 4-wheel L4508 Diesel Tractor, a 2 disc plow, a front loader, and a specially crafted man-lift attachment for the bucket to allow access to all points on RAU’s 640 grafted mangoes. Our faithful  1976 Ford 360,which came in our first container in 2013, was a great blessing in clearing  the land and the progress made on it but it was time for its retirement. We are grateful for those who contributed to make this purchase of the Kubota possible. This tractor will be a blessing for RAU’s 20-acre demonstration farm.  We are grateful for those who contributed to make this purchase possible.  Fortunately, we finished the most important activities the day before several bombs went off in Kampala. On that fateful day, when we heard the news of the bombs, all plans for the day were quickly cancelled.  Such bombings have been more frequent. Please pray for our beloved Uganda!

The three of us (Carol, Paul, and myself) made it from Austin Texas (Nov.10) to Entebbe airport  with 25 tubs full of supplies/resources ,one box, 4 suitcases and 6 carry-on bags. At about 1:30 a.m. (Nov.11), all three of us were able to get to bed at Carpe Diem. We are grateful for our Lifegate Church friends who helped get all the tubs to the Austin airport and also helped unload them and carry them to the check-in line for us! We have been shown so much love!!!!  The story at Austin airport was wild…we almost did not make our flight because our COVID test was not correct…it was a PCR but did not have those 3 letters on the document. STILL!! GOD made a way for us through a COVID testing station near the airport. The results arrived on our phones just in the nick of time!! In Entebbe airport, after our repeat COVID tests, we picked ALL our luggage…none were missing. At Ugandan customs, from my interactions with the officials, I found out that they were Christians. I shared with them what we are doing and prayed for them. A few days later we sent all our boxes and bags up to RAU via bus and they arrived safely before we did. When you look at the process of traveling with all that luggage and then see everything turn out well, you KNOW that many miracles have happened!! We are grateful for those who prayed for our journey. Thank you!

Moyo Airstrip! How grateful we are for MAF flying us directly to Moyo!
All the tubs and cases/boxes arrived safely to our home! What a miracle!

Soon after our return, we sent on their way to various locations a total of 30 “large Proclaimers”. These are native language audio Bibles put out by “Faith Comes by Hearing” and were donated to RAU by Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas. The ones in Arabic are on their way to the Republic of (North) Sudan. The Ma’di ones are in the hands of Moyo church leaders, primarily the Metu Mountain pastors and the other third are in Yumbe Districts in village churches. These are ideal in these locations as many do not have Bibles and/or cannot read. We have encouraged them to gather together throughout the week to listen to the Word of God. Here is a YouTube video demonstration I did with Pastor Tobious in Ayaa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrZcB4UiUCw&t=1s  In addition, twenty Kindle Fires with mobile solar chargers, via “Study to Be Approved“, loaded with Arabic resources, two Arabic Bibles, “Jesus” film in Arabic along ESV Study Bibles, Christian Books in Arabic, and gospel tracts have been placed into the hands of (North) Sudanese church leaders.

On Saturday, December 4th, Carol, Paul, Henry, and I were in Yumbe for a Youth Seminar which Reaching Africa’s Unreached Yumbe coordinator, Onduga Charles, organized for us at Pilgrim Church. The Aringa Christian youth who attended are on fire for Jesus in this largely Muslim populated town and district. Our goal was to encourage them and connect their passion in evangelism with a full orbed view of the gospel message. We also wanted to equip them with an ESV Global Study Bible, dual language Aringa-English gospel tracts especially written for Muslims, a New City Devotional Catechism, and The Message of Hope put out by ABWE Good Soil. The Message of Hope is an excellent chronological study of the scriptures. Our dear brother, Onduga Charles, has translated the tracts and the “Message of Hope” into Aringa. I ran out of tracts and “Message of Hope”. Ten thousand each of the 600,000 six dual language tracts printed (the rest will come in another container)  are on their way and 1,000 of the “Message of Hope” in Aringa have been printed in Kampala through World Gospel Mission’s “Print Shop” and soon will be at Reaching Africa’s Unreached! The “Print Shop” has also printed 100 copies of  Helping Without Hurting In Africa participant’s manual which we will be using in our pastoral modules in the Hall of Tyrannus.   My heart was bubbling with joy to be back in Yumbe. Jesus is building his church in Yumbe among the Aringa!

Great news! The 20,841 ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles are in their container, somewhere between the USA and the port of Mombasa, Kenya. In Christian Book Distributor’s container, which is also on it’s way, are our dual language gospel tracts and books for pastoral modules. Once in Mombasa Kenya they will make their way via land transport to Kampala and then to RAU. Lord willing, sometime in February, the container with the Bibles will be resting on the slab ready made for the container. We just purchased an empty container in country and it was set in place on December 11th. This container will be used for the 600,000 dual language gospel tracts and many other books for use in pastoral training.  Check out our new page on the website to read RAU’s new “Dual Language Tracts” here. I am very grateful for Doug Salser and Literature Ministries International for the printing of these tracts. In our area they are effective tools in sharing the gospel. Gospel tracts beautifully done, such as these, are read by multiple people. The local photos and color draw people’s eyes to read. With many wanting to learn English more proficiently these dual language tracts are like honey.

Here are several YouTube videos on off loading the container we received from Kampala: “New empty Container in preparation for the Bibles coming in February” & Unloading Empty Container.

Please continue in prayer for the ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles and the other resources on their way to RAU. Thank you!

Offloading the empty container and positioning it so that one more container (with the Bibles) will fit right next to it.

I am excited to announce that church leadership retreats will be beginning soon, The fist module is scheduled for December 31–January 8th.  Pastor Jason Van Bemmel and Bob Brown have dedicated these two week out of their busy lives to join us in our primary ministry of  RAU which is Pastoral Leadership training.  Our goal is to have 5 Modules (10 days each) in 5 Retreats which can be completed in one year. We have found that spreading it over too long a period of time causes us to lose students due to life circumstances. The Biblical Curriculum courses are the basics of the Christian faith which leaders need to understand and to be able to effectively teach (AKA 2 Timothy 2:2).  Each of the five retreats will include  Agricultural trainingin the field“. Basics in Economics and Business will also be taught using Helping Without Hurting In Africa and Richest Man in Babylon. The 10-day retreats are long and intense, but I believe it will accomplish our desired goal more effectively.

The two texts we will be using in RAU’s Business/Economics Module

Pastoral Trainings to resume in RAU’s Hall of Tyrannus

RAU’s 20-acre Demo Farm continues to operate, although COVID prevented any large groups from benefitting in 2020 & 2021. RAU is grateful for the continuing support of Missionary Agricultural Resource Services: M.A.R.S. in these efforts.  As pandemic restrictions lift and schools start up again, we look forward to offering hands-on training to community farmers and school groups in addition to the pastors and leaders who will attend the retreats. Our emphasis will be on box gardens/Kitchen gardens (of which we have 18) and grafted mangoes (and other fruit trees). The goal is to inspire entrepreneurial thinking and a “Farming as a Business” mindset in addition to improving farming skills in general.  There are several juicing plants starting up nearby, so if we can encourage the community members to grow grafted mangoes, it can become a source of income for them and our local community.  Paul George has enjoyed being a part of the “Garden Gang” headed up by Zakeo, RAU’s Agricultural Production Officer.  You can see him in the mornings and evenings helping to nurse the young seedlings along. He has been a tremendous encouragement to Zakeo and to all of us as well. (Paul has also been “sowing the seed” of the Word of God next in our neighboring  church, teaching at a Youth conference).

Along with our Biblical/Agriculture training ,evangelism and discipleship in 2022 we at Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) are trusting the Lord to put in more boreholes (water wells) in Moyo District. The District and RAU are looking at 20 of the most needy villages in Moyo Sub-County and Metu Sub-County. Yes…twenty!  RAU, by God’s grace, through our loving partners and a “boots on the ground” approach, has put in 22 boreholes since our move here 2013. We are confident of being able to translate your love gifts into clean and accessible water for many more in Moyo district! This is one of the best ways to physically show the love of Jesus. As the old saying goes, people do not care about how much you know until they know how much you care. Our first push, in concert with Moyo District Water Board, would be a borehole near our Moyo Regional Hospital which would help meet the hygiene needs in the Maternity Ward and Surgical theater. The water would be pumped to a tank which would serve just these two sections of the hospital. The Apostle Paul states that we (Christ’s disciples) are redeemed and purified to BE ZEALOUS for good works! (Titus 2:14). Praying that your zeal would be real!! If we believe that God is who we say He is, our plans are not too big but too small!  If you or anyone you know can help, please email me.

A desperate need for clean, accessible water in our area! The need for clean water in our Moyo District is great…will you help?

Since August of 2020, RAU has established a relationship with ABWE which has continued to develop towards a working partnership. We share with this Missionary Sending Agency a firm belief in the primacy of the local church in missions and in the discipleship of church leaders. We both envision coming alongside what God is already doing in sub-Saharan Africa–the region of the fastest growing church in the world.

Carol and I, as well as the whole RAU team, gratefully appreciate our regular donors. You have been God’s means for us in walking out 2 Timothy 2:2 in our Sub-Saharan, East Africa region. We ask that you please continue in your support. If you are not a regular supporter (and no gift is too small) we ask that you become a monthly donor.  RAU is grateful for all financial gifts!  RAU commits to faithfully using these gifts to extend Christ’s work primarily in Moyo, Yumbe, and Obongi Districts of northwestern Uganda (also called the “West Nile”), and, as we are able, other parts of Uganda, in South Sudan, in Northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in The Republic of (North) Sudan, and in other regions to the North. Because we believe in the primacy of the local church it is our desire that any charitable gifts given to RAU would not compromise what you are  ALREADY giving to your local church and/or to other cross cultural foreign missionaries. Getting the gospel to the unreached will take sacrificial giving on the part of all God’s people. May we walk faithfully in the spirit of 2 Corinthians 8 & 9 so that our Lord God is worshiped by men and women from every tongue , tribe, people, and nation! Truly, now is the time for radical generosity! Information on giving may be found here at our donation page: https://reachingafricasunreached.org/donations/

As we approach the end of the year I ask that you prayerfully consider year end gifts in these areas:

  • Pastoral and agricultural training…walking out 2 Timothy 2:2 in RAU’s Hall of Tyrannus and 20-acre demonstration farm; hosting pastors/leaders with room and board during the 10 day retreats and other resources
  • Evangelism and church planting in cooperation with local churches in geographically unreached areas, in the Metu Mountains, and unreached people groups. We have one “unreached” tribe nearby and many represented in the nearby refugee settlements from both South Sudan and the Republic of (North) Sudan.
  • Walking hand in hand with local churches in the discipleship of their members through Bibles (both audio “Proclaimers” and printed  Bibles) distribution (local languages), Christian literature, Kindle Fires, and teaching.
  • Distribution of Study Bibles, Kindle Fires, Christian literature, and tracts to pastors working in both South Sudan and The Republic of Sudan as well as to pastors in the nearby refugee settlements
  • 20 Boreholes in 2022, with the first one being for the Moyo Regional Hospital. Currently, the doctors and medical personnel must rely on water brought by jerry-cans by families of patients (from unknown sources) for the hygiene necessary for their work. From survey work to hand pump the cost for one borehole is $8000. The one for the Moyo Hospital will be more as it requires a production pump. If you cannot help, please reach out to others who may be able to help us provide clean water in these very needy places.
  • Funds for basic medical supplies for our local Moyo Hospital. RAU would work in concert with the Hospital Administrator and a missionary surgeon.
  • Educational sponsorships. This requires people who are committed for the long term, to see a child or adult through their program. We have ones who need help in Primary, Secondary, Polytech, Nursing, University, and graduate levels.

Your partners in walking out 2 Timothy 2:2 with our Ugandan and Sudanese brothers and sisters in Christ,

Jacob and Carol Lee

Our love and blessings to each one of you!

The greatest evil is having the gospel and not doing everything within our power to get it to those who do not have it!

Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!When at least 35% of the world; “the unoccupied fields”, have no access to the gospel, we (believers) must all do all we can to reach them. We who are saved owe the gospel to every lost person, most especially the 2.4 billion who will not hear unless someone breaks into their “unoccupied field” with no thought of their own life!Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!I am sure that none of us will say when in heaven that we prayed too much, we sacrificed too much, proclaimed the gospel too much, and were too passionate to get the gospel to those who have little to no access to this gospel of grace. Let us together press on to make it our  ambition to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named! Our goal in our gospel witness is to take our eyes off the “risk” and place them on the cause for the risk. When God compels us like this he often will not tell us the risks…after all there are no risks for the all-knowing, all-powerful God. So let us be AMBITIOUS (Romans 15:20) to see that ALL are reached with the gospel of grace (Romans 1:16) in ALL places…there are no closed doors to the gospel, just some which are more difficult to go through!Jacob Lee

Uganda in our sights!

Our extended stay in America  is soon coming to end. Carol and I have tickets to leave Austin,Texas for Entebbe Uganda on November 9th.  We have a long time friend, Paul George, who will be traveling back with us. Paul has been a faithful supporter of Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) since we left for our new home located on the Ugandan/South Sudan border in 2013. He has been to RAU once in the past. Now that he is “retired” he wants to spend a number of months with us each year. I know Paul will be a great blessing  to the people of our area as well as to Carol and me.

Pray that Bibles such as these arrive safely to RAU!!!

I have some updates since my last report to you on September 30th. First, please pray for RAU’s 20,841 ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles to be loaded in their container and put on the ship and also the container for Christian BookChristian Book’s container is carrying a good number of resources  for us, as I mentioned in the Sept. 30th newsletter, as well as for other ministries in Uganda. Both containers should have left by now but the backlog at the port is holding up their departure. Thank you!

In the Sept. 30th newsletter, I had requested prayers and donations for a tractor and funds to do another borehole. Praise God, within a couple days, funds were given for these two needs. Praise God for his grace and the love of his people!  After contacting our local elected village leader about us being able to do another borehole, RAU received from the Moyo District Water Board a letter of appreciation for the 22 boreholes (water wells) RAU has completed in the District. In their letter they also highlighted 13 other villages in need of a borehole so they also would have greater access to clean water. Pray with us on this as it would be a big undertaking.

The video below entitled, “Water for Gwere”, is one of the recent boreholes we were able to complete. At the filming of this video, little did I know that the Lord through his people would enable us to do more wells than what we were believing for at the time. Isn’t it just like the Lord to do over and above what we ask for?

Since my last writing, Carol and I were able to attend  two events to which ABWE had invited us. We received training and certification in a portion of their Good Soil Evangelism and Discipleship curriculum and attended their 24-hour Demo Day. They were gracious to Carol and me, allowing us to make a short presentation in the Africa breakout sessions. We met many like minded brothers and sisters interested in long term missions at this missionary recruitment event. The Good Soil curriculum is something we want to be using more and more in RAU’s evangelism and discipleship.

We are currently working with Good Soil and our Madi, Aringa, and Sudanese brothers on the ground, getting some of their materials translated into Madi, Aringa and Sudanese Arabic. Carol and I are hoping for a closer and closer partnership with ABWE. Please pray as both ABWE and RAU seek wisdom and direction in this. Thank you!

At this time it looks like Uganda’s lockdown is ending. Lord willing, we will start up again with our module training in the Hall of Tyrannus at the end of the year. We have been praying for this! RAU’s main mission and vision as an organization is to walk alongside local churches, fulfilling 2 Timothy 2:2. Along with teaching of the fundamentals of the faith we also give instruction in sound economic practices and hands-on Farming as a Business” training. Of course, COVID-19 put a big damper on all those desired plans.

During our Stateside visit we have been in 13 churches and in seven states. We are so grateful for the many opportunities we have had to reconnect with so many friends and  for the new friendships which have been made. We are sorry if we were not able to see all of you. Hopefully, on our next trip we will be able to do so. Our greatest joy was to have extended time with our family! We recently heard the good news that grandbaby number NINE is on the way and due in May. This will be Anna and Kenny’s number three. We look forward to meeting this precious gift later in 2022 on our next visit to the States. Please be in prayer for this sweet little one.

Some excellent reads!

In the midst of our travels I have been able to work through some great books. My favorites have been  E.D. Burns’ two books,  The Missionary–Theologian: Sent into the World, Sanctified by the Word  and The Transcultural Gospel…oh my! what great reads!  I am in my second reading of them and will do a third reading. Another book that has “hit me straight between the eyes” with its scriptural exhortations is the small book, Humbled:Welcoming the Uncomfortable Work of God by David Mathis. Currently, I am also working through Gospel Privilege:The Unearned Advantage that is Meant for Everyone by  David Joannes. I highly recommend each one of these to you! Read, read and read some more! :-).

If you think of it, please pray for us, for Paul, and our many tubs of supplies we are bringing back with us to RAU on November 9th-10th. We are grateful for all your prayers, encouragement and loving financial support.

You are partners in walking out 2 Timothy 2:2 with our Ugandan and Sudanese brothers and sisters in Christ,

Stateside Update

20,841 ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles are currently on their way to Reaching Africa’s Unreached

Greetings from Texas! Carol and I, as well as the Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) team, appreciate your loving support and prayers. Our ministry endeavors are completely dependent upon God’s grace and loving, mission-minded local churches and friends like you. Thank you!

Our last newsletter was in late June and much has happened since then to bring you up to speed.  We had doubts about being able to leave RAU on our scheduled departure date of July 2nd because of the lockdown in Uganda at that time. We had previously moved our departure date twice for various reasons. By God’s grace, things providentially fell into place and we landed in Texas on July 3rd. It had been 18 months since our last visit to America, therefore we planned for a longer stay in the States than our previous trips. We wanted and have been able to spend extended time with children and their spouses, and our eight grandchildren. The youngest grandchild was born while we were in Uganda. We also have had family time with my Dad, siblings/family, cousins, Uncle, and Carol’s brother.  As many of you know, while we were under lockdown in Uganda, my mom went to be with Jesus whom she loved, so we missed hugging her neck but we know we will see her in glory. This family time has been very precious for Carol and me.

During our stay we have also been doing lots of traveling and have been in seven different States. We have had the opportunity to be in 10 local churches, sharing in Adult Sunday Schools and proclaiming God’s Word in worship services. My text has been John 15: 15-17. I titled the message: “Chosen and Appointed with Purpose”. My prayer and hope has been to encourage God’s people that our Lord is always on his Plan A. He is preparing and using us to walk out our calling and purpose in this life, to “bear fruit”. The video and audio of the sermon is here. We also have had many opportunities to show the video which Carol put together that covers the ministry opportunities we had in 2020 and 2021. The video is entitled “Sovereign Over Us”: 2020-2021 Ministry Video.

God has graciously allowed us also to share with many families and individuals as well as with like-minded mission leaders/staff at ABWE, Reaching and Teaching International, CNET, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. We have had so many good meals we will be arriving back to RAU a bit heavier. We have stayed in many homes and have been graciously and lovingly hosted. Dear friends, Ken and Linda Wolfe, from our home church of Lifegate Church in Seguin Texas, have been so kind to allow us to stay with them in their guest home as a base. Friends, and also members of Lifegate Church, Gerard and Mary Lopez, have loaned us one of their vehicles during our stay. Carol and I have been overwhelmed by our friends’ love and that of the many others who have graciously cared for us. As we no longer have a home in the USA, this loving care is all the more precious to us.

During our 2020-2021 Uganda COVID lockdowns we did not slow down…we just changed gears. By God’s grace, his people’s gifts and our hard working RAU team, improvements were made on our 20-acre demo farm in partnership with Missionary Agricultural Resource Services, inside renovations took place which now allows four long term missions families to live on campus, local stones were put on all the walkways and driving areas all the way to front gate. A slab next to our containers is ready for a third container coming with 20,841 ESV TruTone Global Study Bibles which are currently on their way to RAU. The slab is big enough for a fourth container, Lord willing, in 2022, full of resources for church leaders in Uganda, South Sudan and the Republic of Sudan.  Our motto at RAU, when building,  is to make it last until Jesus comes and because we are created in the image of God, at the end of each day’s work we, too, should see and say that “it is good” (Genesis 1).

Six hundred thousand dual language tracts (Four Aringa/English; One Madi/English; One Arabic/English: 100,000 of each one) have been printed in partnership with Literature Ministries International. Some are on their way in a Christian Book container along with 5,300 various books for RAU’s curriculum for church leadership modules. The rest of the tracts will come in a future Christian Book container to Uganda. Our Aringa brother, Charles Onduga, translated the four Aringa tracts. Charles also has translated into Aringa the Message of Hope in partnership with Good Soil Evangelism and Discipleship. Charles is currently working on my Christian-Muslim Dialog booklets. Our Darfurian co-worker, Joshua Abraham, and a team from the Republic of Sudan will be doing the same into Arabic. Just recently, 100’s of Arabic books, ESV Study Bibles, and Arabic Study Bibles are on their way to church leaders in the Republic of Sudan. Our Texas friend, Delmar Hagar, with Study to Be Approved is getting ready some Kindle Fire devices loaded with 9 Mark Arabic materials and the Jesus Film in Arabic to be taken back with us. These also will go to pastors in the Republic of Sudan. As the social and political climate opens up there, we want to take advantage of this openness to get resources there which have been long lacking.

Eleven additional boreholes (water wells) were drilled, giving clean accessible water to eleven villages. With these eleven, it makes twenty two total boreholes which the partners of RAU have helped fund, giving water to villages that did not have access to clean water. We are hopeful for another as $2,000 of the $8000 needed for additional borehole has been given. Praise God from whom all blessings  flow! Clean accessible  water in this case!

Before returning to RAU in the beginning of November, we will attend two events to which ABWE has invited us. We will be receiving training and certification in their Good Soil Evangelism and Discipleship curriculums October 11-13. Then, on October 22-23, we will attend their Demo Day. ABWE as well as Reaching and Teaching International  are the mission agencies with whom we wish to maintain a long term relationship as they hold to the primacy of the local church in missions and discipleship of church leaders for the fastest growing church in the world…the Sub Saharan Africa.  This is the heart and soul of Reaching Africa’s Unreached!

You may view a short, 3-minute video which Carol recently made about RAU here entitled- Reaching Africa’s Unreached in 3 Minutes An excellent call for workers in the fields that are ripe for harvest with few workers!

The Ford tractor we brought in the first container 8 years ago is on its last leg. It has been so helpful in clearing RAU’s 20 acres making it into the demo farm it is today. I am of the strong opinion (there are no parts in Uganda for it) that we need to get a new small, 4-wheel drive tractor in Uganda to replace it to help in our 20 acre demo farm. I estimate we will need at least $15,000 to get one with a bucket and corresponding implements. Please pray with us and consider helping if you can. Thank you.

Carol and I are grateful that Reaching Africa’s Unreached  was renewed five more years in its Ugandan NGO status. Also that Carol and I have received three more years on our work visas. This has been our fourth renewal. Carol and I also received good news from our doctors’ and dentists’ appointments. A phrase we often hear at such appointments is “You are doing well for your age”. I can appreciate that at 66. We rejoice that throughout 2020 and 2021 we did not have malaria even once. Our Lord was so gracious to us in this! That was not the case for many others in our Moyo District, unfortunately.

Please also pray that we can once again resume our on-campus module training(s) in the RAU Hall of Tyrannus as well as on-campus agricultural training(s) for church leaders as well as for  community members. Pray also that we can resume open air evangelism in markets, travel freely for discipleship in local churches and resume our Christian-Muslim dialogs with Sheikh’s and Imams.

With Gratefulness for you,

Jacob and Carol Lee

The greatest evil is having the gospel and not doing everything within our power to get it to those who do not have it!

Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!

When at least 35% of the world; “the unoccupied fields”, have no access to the gospel, we (believers) must all do all we can to reach them. We who are saved owe the gospel to every lost person, most especially the 2.4 billion who will not hear unless someone breaks into their “unoccupied field” with no thought of their own life!

Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!

I am sure that none of us will say when in heaven that we prayed too much, we sacrificed too much, proclaimed the gospel too much, and were too passionate to get the gospel to those who have little to no access to this gospel of grace.

So let us be AMBITIOUS (Romans 15:20) to see that ALL are reached with the gospel of grace (Romans 1:16) in ALL places…there are no closed doors to the gospel, just some which are more difficult to go through!

“Sovereign Over Us”: 2020-2021 Ministry Video

This “season” of ministry for us has been particularly long with different kinds of challenges than in previous years. I imagine most of us could say that given the circumstances of the worldwide pandemic and the specific ways in which it has touched our lives personally.

This Ministry video is an accounting of the faithfulness of God even in the midst of chaos and change. No other situations than what we experienced from March, 2020 up to the present have given us greater schooling in looking to the Lord for grace and wisdom and faith and hope. No other circumstances have forced us to cling as desperately to His sure Word and find Him faithful. He is truly sovereign over the affairs of men. He is truly good, even when we can’t see the good so clearly. Ultimately, it’s all for HIS glory and our good. We hope and pray this video will find you singing along with us, “You [God] are Sovereign over us”.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
and your ways are not my ways.”
This is the LORD’s declaration.
“For as heaven is higher than earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven
and do not return there
without saturating the earth
and making it germinate and sprout,
and providing seed to sow
and food to eat,
so my word that comes from my mouth
will not return to me empty,
but it will accomplish what I please
and will prosper in what I send it to do.”

Isaiah 55:8-11

The “DNA” of RAU

DNA: “genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms.” (Wikipedia) “The fundamental and distinctive characteristics or qualities of someone or something…” (Oxford Dictionary)

From conception to growth, the “DNA” of Reaching Africa’s Unreached (RAU) is to be God-glorifying, God-empowered and people-loving in its development, function, growth and reproduction. RAU cares about God’s good towards His creation in ALL aspects of life, but most urgently and fervently about a person’s eternal good in God. This “DNA” instructs our vision, passion, energy, resources and outcomes and guides the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of this ministry.

While RAU is primarily a spiritually-driven ministry–a means for promoting the fulfillment of Christ’s promise to build His Church through the extension of the local church–we recognize that we also operate as an entity (NGO = Non Governmental Organization) in a geo-political setting that has its own agenda and expectations for those working within its borders (goals which include: “education, health, water and sanitation, environmental management, infrastructure development and a host of other important areas that impact the quality of life of Ugandans” as cited in the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ National NGO Policy).

The binding of these two “DNAs” has not been simple, but they are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, they are like the double helix in a strand of DNA. We are convinced that RAU has the same priority to impact “the quality of life of Ugandans” and in many coinciding ways. RAU firmly believes that holistic attention must be given to the people it serves: education, health, clean and consistently accessible water and socioeconomic empowerment through capacity building.

Additionally, the ultimately important aspect of “quality of life” is spiritual and character-driven and so we gladly apply our energy to coming alongside those who have been given the task of shaping generations of individuals and families through God-centered, God-empowered teaching of Scripture–Pastors and leaders in the Church. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. RAU believes that a healthy, thriving and shining Uganda is one where individual citizens are at peace with and empowered in their knowledge of God, shaped by the Word of God in their character, bearing the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) and living in service of God’s glory and the good of their neighbors. Through the multiplying effect of 2 Timothy 2:2 (faithful people teaching faithful people who will teach others), this desired good will be like leaven which spreads throughout the whole lump of dough.

“In a democracy we are “citizen-kings” with obligations to shape the life of our land in all its business and professional practices and all its political and legal activity. While social and political life was controlled by a monarch, citizens could content themselves with private ethics. But where “citizen-kings” rule, there is personal responsibility for larger ethical issues.” ~John Piper (ideas borrowed from Rauschenbusch)

https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/moses-rauschenbusch-and-moral-distinctiveness

The true wealth of a nation lies not in it’s gold or silver but in it’s learning, wisdom and in the uprightness of its sons.” ~Khalil Gibran

“Governments cannot afford to fully replace the functions families perform for the benefit of their members and for the good of society. The family is the most powerful, the most humane and, by far, the most economical system known for building competence and character.” (International Federation for Family Development (IFFD) NGO in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC)

RAU wants to strengthen the fiber and fabric of Uganda by focusing on the character and godliness of the individual and the family (which are the most important building blocks of any nation) through strong churches led by strong pastors. At the same time, RAU wants to do as much as is possible to holistically nourish socioeconomic growth and independence, health and wellbeing. As Jacob often says, “Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!”

The years, 2020 and 2021, put a road-block in the way of the trainings we had hoped to deliver to the Pastors and leaders whom we serve. Due to COVID restrictions, the larger gatherings for retreats and training at the RAU campus were not possible and the effects were felt. We pray for the day that circumstances will allow us to go full throttle with the trainings. Still, 2020 and 2021 opened the way to raise money for a special printing of 20,000 ESV Global Study Bibles which are on their way to RAU and also to receive 16,000+ books and ESV and Arabic Study Bibles (from The Gospel Coalition and Christian Books) for Pastors and Leaders (English and Arabic). We are confident that the good work the Lord has begun He will also continue and bring to completion! (Philippians 1:6). We rest with confidence on the words of Jesus (in Matthew) about Peter’s confession of Christ’s Lordship, “on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”

RAU Campus and Demo Farm–both sides of the road. Newly planted grafted mangoes on the smaller acreage on the left side of the road.

The RAU Demo Farm, through which we aspire to empower local leaders and community farmers, is coming to life with the seasonal rains (though late this year) so that plowing and planting have started. In fact, the maize and beans have already germinated and are growing quite rapidly. It’s amazing how everything becomes lush with every imaginable shade of green once the first rains come. The plan for the farm is to focus more on demonstration of common, market-ready crops (grains, legumes and vegetables) (specifically in box gardens–there are a total of 18) rather than large production of seed crops. Maize (posho) and beans will be eaten by us!! The demo farm continues to also focus on grafted mangoes to encourage local production so that a juicing plant will become an enticing possibility for the local economy. Zakeo, our Agricultural Production Officer, has planted 100 more grafted mango seedlings on the farm. He has learned the process of grafting which he plans to teach to local farmers.

Where the door of pastoral training seemed tightly shut, another door has swung wide open. RAU was able to forge ahead in providing clean water for a number of villages in desperate need of boreholes. RAU donors opened their hearts WIDE and gave enough funding for 6 new Boreholes–some in the Metu Mountains and some closer to us in nearby Moyo Sub-County villages. We are praying and asking for funding for 5 more boreholes. All 11 targeted villages have been tested for drilling sites and water locations have been identified. It’s only a matter of funding them. To date, RAU has been able to fund 11 boreholes in the past–Ayaa (2), Ijujo, Cinyi, Alugodu, Pamulu, Meria, Gbari/Arapi, Duku, Oyo and Fodia. Recently, several more boreholes were sunk in Kendi, Eria, Pacuahwi and Vura Opi. Additionally, these others are on the list: Gwere, Wano, Itia, Wele, Onyire, Abeso, and Padiga. We pray that the Lord will give success to the drillers and protect the equipment (which has been a bit problematic) and stir the hearts of people to donate towards this project.

Jacob likes to travel to each village with co-worker, Mindra, (the local government leader [LCI] for Fodia, where RAU is located) and has the opportunity to hear the pleas of the LCI’s and the community members and then encourage them with the cheering news that God, through His people, loves them and hears their cries and has provided the leg up they need. Some of the villages are nearly impossible for the drilling equipment to reach. Community members have had to put creative energy into digging a new road for the vehicles to pass. This is what happened at Gwere. The village members cut a path for the Land Cruiser which made it; however, the trucks with the drilling equipment could not make it up some steep roads. They hired a large tractor which also failed to pull the trucks up the hill. The next option was to borrow a government-owned caterpillar but that door closed. What was left? For the village members to make an alternate route for the drilling equipment–and they agreed and are busy making a passable road! Lord willing, this week, Gwere will have a road built and the Drilling company will make it there! Jacob hopes to also be there to document that wonderful event.

Clean water (and the lack of it) is still a major problem that affects many aspects of daily life. Our hearts are burdened for the women (and children) who struggle with heavy burdens to carry the bare minimum of water they need for each day, sometimes from holes in the ground. When clean water is provided, it impacts people in a number of significant ways as listed below.

1. 3.575 million people die every year as a direct result of water-borne illness. When people without access to clean water resort to drinking from contaminated water sources, someone could easily contract diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. However, a major effect of clean water is that it helps prevent water-borne illness.

2. We ingest water through our food, and our body even absorbs some of the water we wash with. Therefore, both are difficult to do effectively if you do not have clean water. As a result, even if your drinking water is clean and purified, washing with unclean water can still make you susceptible to various hazards.

3. Hydration also helps the body naturally flush toxins from within. However, with unclean and contaminated water, more toxins enter the body than those that leave it, creating a harmful environment for bacteria and illness to spread.

4. Agriculture and food production are crucial for everyone across the globe. If a small village’s crops are irrigated with contaminated water, any bacteria and diseases found in the water can be spread to those who eat the contaminated crops. However, the safest food sources stem from working with safe and clean water.

5. Did you know that the average distance someone in a developing community walks to fetch water is 3.75 miles? In most cases, collecting the daily water supply falls on the women in a village. On average, a 5-gallon jug filled with water amounts to 44 pounds. Over time, the excessive weight of the water containers carried over a long distance can create additional health issues for the individuals carrying it. Also, imagine how much more challenging the task of toting a water jug would be when already suffering from dehydration brought on by drinking unclean water.

The Source of water at Gwere

Again, while our Biblical training was slowed to a halt for the time being, Jacob used the opportunity to renovate some of the buildings for that time when teaching activities come to life. The tukaloos, in which the pastors and leaders stay, the team quarters in the “Big House” and Lydia’s House were all targeted for improvements. Jacob likes to say, “We want things to last for generations–until Jesus comes, if necessary!” One of our aims is to make some of the buildings fit for families. Our hope has always been that other families or individuals would join us in this mission. There is simply too much work to do and not enough laborers. We are happy to report that Zorah (and his new wife, Josiane) are joining us full-time to work in the area of community development and discipleship. Also, our dear friend, Board member and brother in Christ, Nurse Sam (who recently graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree) will also be returning as a part of the RAU team to head up medical outreaches.

In the midst of the challenges of 2020 and 2021, we have also been experiencing the growing pains of our NGO recertification process and work permit renewals. The Daily Monitor (a Ugandan news source) reported in 2019 that “only 2,119 NGOs of the registered 14,027 NGOs were validated and issued with operational permits by the National Bureau of NGOs. This means a total of 11,908 NGOs were not validated.” Thankfully, RAU made the cut in 2019. However, it’s time to renew and the regulations for NGO certification have become more stringent than ever. By the grace of God, Thomas, our Financial Administrative Officer in Uganda is knowledgeable, wise and persistent and has been absolutely vital in getting us lined up with Ugandan policy as it relates to NGOs. Our brother and fellow Board Member, Patrick, is so instrumental in keeping our feet “on the ground.” Please pray that these renewals come through soon (five-year renewal of NGO certification and 3-year work permits)!

Nothing has taught us more clearly that we must hold our ideas and plans loosely than the COVID pandemic and the ensuing disruptions–in both 2020 and 2021. Yet, the sovereign goodness of God gives us the greatest comfort that “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” No doubt, the things that have been accomplished have happened through human strategy and agency and under geo-political jurisdiction. However, while we encrypt in human language the “DNA” for RAU’s purpose, though we submit to the authority of human governments, our hope is built solidly on a greater Designer whose plans for us can never be thwarted and Whose DNA we carry! “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10). May we be found faithful in ALL He has given us to do and may we do it for the glory of God and the good of the people we serve!!

In loving service to God and humanity,

Jacob & Carol Lee
