Pause, Reflect, Reset

Pause, Reflect, Reset

Wow! The world as we know it has come to a screeching halt–or, at least, a to a slowwwww crawl; unless you are among those frantically working to contain or treat COVID-19 which has gone “viral” or among those who are in the supply chain for crucial materials and activities.  So many countries are directly affected by the virus.  It hasn’t yet reached Uganda where Jacob and I were under a self-imposed quarantine for our first 14 days, and where we are now watching with Ugandans and holding our collective breath to see if early measures by the government to contain the threat are sufficient. On March 18, President Museveni addressed Uganda with a well-crafted and convincing message on the current state of COVID-19, a description of the pathway for infection which the public can easily understand and the announcement to begin a preemptive 32 day period of social distancing and good hygiene (even though not even one case has yet been reported).

COVID-19 has been a harsh awakening for the world with a devastating impact on many—sickness, death, and financial disaster. For most of us so far, it has simply been inconvenient, scrambling our plans and sense of safety and  normalcy and bringing with it the fear that it may touch us more personally—physically, emotionally and financially.

For all of us, though, it is providing an unexpected opportunity to pause, reflect and reset.  The mechanisms of our daily life have us all hurtling along with barely a moment to consider why we are doing what we are doing and if all of it is really necessary or of primary importance.  What we seem unable to do by willfulness and discipline the Lord often helps us do by circumstance.  I would venture to say that some of us have a sense of relief brought on by externally imposed constraints—so we can make thoughtful changes, hopefully, with long-term good and God’s glory in mind.

Upon our return to Uganda, all our best laid plans were cleared off the calendar. Now, with the government imposed quarantine, social distancing measures and heightened preparation for the “invasion” of COVID-19 into Uganda, we are wondering what ministry will look like.  We have been sifting through the information and trying to project outcomes, but we are also praying and asking for wisdom to know how we are to represent Christ and serve in such a time as this and to hear what the Lord is saying specifically to us—to Reaching Africa’s Unreached.

So, what is the Lord saying? Not anything He hasn’t said through the centuries through His word.  However, such harsh circumstances sure do provide good reminders to a world that seemed to be cruising on autopilot:

1.  This world is not home; it is not heaven.

We should not be looking for this world to provide what only the Lord, in the next one, can and will when we put our faith in Him.  Romans 8:18 says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.” “For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

(2 Corinthians 4:17)

2. God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but all to come to repentance.

I love this quote from John Piper:  All natural disasters — whether floods, famines, locusts, tsunamis, or diseases — are a thunderclap of divine mercy in the midst of judgment, calling all people everywhere to repent and realign their lives, by grace, with the infinite worth of the glory of God…Now, that’s the message of Jesus to the world at this moment in history, under the coronavirus — a message to every single human being.Jesus’ own words are clear: “And he responded to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were more sinful than all the other Galileans because they suffered these things? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well. Or those eighteen that the tower in Siloam fell on and killed — do you think they were more sinful than all the other people who live in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well.” (Luke 13:2-5)

3.  Our investment of time and resource should match our priorities and we should not rally only when times are tough, but also when “normal” returns.

What guides us in crisis ought to be the tracks which we have already laid for ourselves in times of peace and normalcy.  However, what really matters becomes clearest when we stand on the brink of disaster or death.

Marshall Segal writes in an article called, “What Courage Might Corona Unleash”:

The gospel is always drowned out more easily in peacetime. What is there to fear? But not in a pandemic. When a cholera outbreak came to London, Charles Spurgeon admonished everyone in Christ, ‘Now is the time for all of you who love souls. You may see men more alarmed than they are already; and if they should be, mind that you avail yourselves of the opportunity of doing them good. You have the Balm of Gilead; when their wounds smart, pour it in. You know of Him who died to save; tell them of Him. Lift high the cross before their eyes. Tell them that God became man that man might be lifted to God.’”

If we don’t already have this mindset, it’s a good time to pause, reflect and reset.

Jacob and I have chosen to stay where God has put us and to live with and serve our neighbors in this time of crisis.  We are trusting His sovereign grace to keep us and enable to us to serve as long as He gives us breath.  Our lives are safe in His care.  Jacob loves to quote John Patton who, when being chased by cannibals or encountering fierce opponents, would pray, “Lord, protect me or take me home.” Our presence here sends a clear message to our Ugandan friends (and those of other nationalities) that we are here with them in “good” times as well as the “bad” times and  here for them; we are serious about bringing glory to God in this West Nile region where we have been “planted”.

“The principle of the Gospel is this: the Gospel always brings life to the receiver and death to the giver. If the Gospel brought death to Jesus Christ, why would we think that in preaching the Gospel it would be any less for us? If you’ve known the love of God, if you’ve tasted of it sweetness at all, there is no other way to serve Him except giving up your life. And this is voluntary. This is not a sentence at all! We’re not sentenced to death; we are privileged to answer the call”

Jackie Pullinger

While we wait out the storm, RAU will continue it’s discipleship ministry in small groups and one on one, following the guidelines set out by the government for people’s safety.  We cannot hold trainings here for the next 32 days, at least, and possibly longer, depending the impact that COVID-19 has in Uganda, however we will do what we can within the guidelines.  Our Agricultural training (on site and via radio) and demo farm will continue its mission of empowering the Body of Christ and local farmers to do farming as a business through knowledge and provision of improved variety of seeds. We plan to grow beans (lentils) mostly as a means of food security for this area.  And, we want to be present and supportive if and when a Coronavirus outbreak occurs.

RAU continues to make a push to raise the $185,000 towards ESV Global Study Bibles.  The word of God in the hands of faithful people is as important as it ever was. Due to the financial tornado produced by the Coronavirus epidemic, it will be a greater sacrifice—we are aware of that, but we continue to ask you to be a part of getting that next container of literature here.

As provision comes RAU has been distributing Kindles (loaded with the Jesus Film in several languages in addition to many books and teachings, some even in Arabic).  This happens through the ministry of STBA (Study To Be Approved).  This time around we were able to deliver 39 Kindle Fires into the hands of pastors and leaders heading into the Republic of (North) Sudan which is opening up more and more to Gospel ministry. Many thanks to Delmar and Nancy Hager. The Sudanese men also received books in Arabic which we received through the Gospel Coalition International Outreach and were carried to RAU by friends and us.  Keep praying for RAU as we seek to walk out 2 Timothy 2:2.

Men from Darfur,Nuba Mountains and Khartoum – The Republic of (North) Sudan

While we were in the USA over the winter months (brrrrr!), the Lord provided a generous donation through a loving partner in ministry towards an Agricultural Technical Training Center/Tutoring Center for Primary and Secondary Students/Adult Literacy Center which we hope to eventually construct on the 3-acre parcel across the road from RAU’s main campus/demo farm.  Towards that end, we are taking the second step (the first was purchasing and clearing the land) towards acquiring an official Ugandan Land Title for the 3 acre property.  As we work on this we will plant maize and beans on the 3 acres.  Pray for us we keep pressing forward on this God ordained vision.

In other words, after pausing and reflecting, what is the Lord telling us to do?—what we were doing, with some modifications and caution. May the Lord give grace to us all to do His will cheerfully for His glory and the good of all.

We continue to thank each and everyone of you who are doing this work with us through your sacrificial giving and support in many forms!

From one of Jacob’s Facebook posts:

“You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.”
(2 Corinthians 1:11)
2 Corinthians 1:11 is a verse which often gives Carol and me great comfort and encouragement! Living as missionaries in the midst of a foreign culture, seeking to be a part of strengthening God’s people (2 Timothy 2:2) and making it our ambition to take the gospel to those with little or no access to it (Romans 15:20) would be fruitless without your intercession and support!
Without your prayers we might just as well go back to Texas to “retire” and enjoy our children/spouses,grandchildren, family, and friends in the latter years of our lives.
Here is my expanded version of 2 Corinthians 1:11: “You” (our fellow ambassadors) “must help” (a necessity) “us” (your co-labors in the faith) “by prayer” (essential to foreign missions as well as all of life) “so that” (connecting words) “many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us” (result of faithful prayer) “through the prayers of many.” (the reason for thanksgiving and blessing).
Thank you for your prayers and support!

With Gratefulness,

Carol and Jacob Lee

20,000 ESV Global Study Bibles to RAU

ESV Global.jpg
Dear Friends,
Carol and I are fast approaching our return trip to Reaching Africa’s Unreached! We have spent time in six different states. Our time with children (and their spouses), grandchildren and immediate family members encompassed the first part of our visit back to the States. Our time in our home town of Seguin, Texas was complicated by the priority of getting medical, dental and vision check-ups.  Our plan for reunions with friends was narrowed by my need for dental surgery after which I was laid up for awhile. Carol will soon write about USA visit in her beautiful themed story telling way for you. I am sure she will also have many beautiful pictures for you too.
I have another purpose for this newsletter.
Many of you may recall the news I shared via newsletters, videos, and Facebook posts in the latter part of 2019 about God’s gracious hand opening hearts and changing lives in the Republic of (North) Sudan. The Lord has set RAU in a geographically strategic place and “for a time such as this” to be able to be a part of Christ building his church in the Republic of Sudan ,South Sudan, and RAU’s own beautiful West Nile of Uganda.
Please take a few minutes to watch this video interview I did with some of our (North) Sudanese brothers for first hand accounts of how God is moving in the Republic of Sudan. These men currently reside in  nearby refugee settlements.
Video: “God’s Sovereign Grace in Sudan
As we all know, a vital  part of any healthy and growing church is the opportunity for God’s people to have his word, the Bible. Since 2013, RAU has, by God’s grace and the love of his people, given out over 15,000 Bibles/New Testaments: Aringa,Madi, & Arabic NT’s,  English, Arabic, and Swahili full bibles.  Over 8,000 of these have been ESV Global Study Bibles which have been primarily placed into the hands of church leaders. These Bibles currently are now in Uganda, South Sudan, Republic of (North) Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and a small number in Chad.
dscf8099.jpg
It is most especially vital for the under Shepherd’s which God raises up to care for and nurture the local church to have a  good Bible. RAU’s vision and mission from the beginning is to walk out 2 Timothy 2:2 with biblical training and provision of study tools to help equip the leaders that God is raising up. The ESV Global Study Bibles have been the best tool RAU has been able to place in  Shepherd’s “tool boxes“. English is widely spoken and read in our area. The ESV Global Study Bibles in our container are now running critically low.
For some months now it has been in my heart  to bring an additional 20,000  ESV Global Study Bibles in a third 40-foot container to RAU. This is the number we can carry without going over the weight limit. Remember the roads in our area are not hard surfaced. Before Christmas, I was contacted by a representative of Christianbook.  Providentially, he had read our October newsletter which lays out in seed form the vision of getting more ESV Global Study Bibles to RAU.  Long story short, Carol and I were able to meet with him in Baltimore this last January.  Our hearts and vision were knit together immediately!  Since then, he has been able to help us get this vision fleshed out with Crossway, the publisher of the ESV Global Study Bible, and to arrange for Christianbook to help us send the container to Uganda.
My desire has been to get the True Tone ESV Global Study Bible in a box. The reason for this is that they greatly outlast hardbacks, especially when they come in their own individual boxes. We want to place in the hands of church leaders a quality study Bible which best survives the rugged environmental conditions of our geographical area.
I am happy to report that a great deal has been worked out with Crossway. We can purchase a True Tone ESV Global Study Bible at cost in a box  for the remarkable price of $7.80! Wow, wow, wow! When we include the purchase of the 40-foot, seaworthy container and shipping costs (from the East coast of America to dropping it on RAU’s soil) the cost of one bible is $9.25! The total cost, then, for 20,000 True Tone ESV Global Study Bibles is $185,000. This is a big number, but it is not too much for our sovereign God and his people to place these study bibles into church leaders’ hands from Uganda, South Sudan and the Republic of (North) Sudan.
“Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God….I am not afraid of failure. I am afraid of succeeding at things  which do not matter”
William Carey
In order to receive the shipment of Bibles when we need them, we need to raise the money in the next two months.  Crossway will then do a special printing with a special note from RAU inside each Bible. It would then take about 4 months to get them published and set in the container. Then they would make their long journey to RAU. We now  have, because of God’s favor and our length of time on the ground, faithful contacts in all three countries (Uganda,South Sudan, and the Republic of Sudan), including Khartoum itself! RAU commits  to being a good steward by placing these Bibles into hands of leaders. Our  vision and heart is to walk out our 2 Timothy 2:2 mandate.
2 Timothy 2 2.jpg
May I boldly request you  to be a part of getting these  ESV Global Study Bibles into hands of leaders in the West Nile of Uganda, South Sudan, and the Republic of (North) Sudan?!! Please help us in whatever way you can to connect the remaining dots. Also,  would you please contact your friends/church and pass along this God-given opportunity to them to help. Please leverage every tool at your disposal to help us get these bibles into the hands of church leaders. I greet this from afar by faith: a container with 20,000 True Tone ESV Global Study Bibles on RAU soil!

Please pray, pray, and pray! Give, give and give!
Here is how you can do this. You may write checks  out to RAU and on the memo line: “Bibles”. You also may go to our PayPal link and give via credit card. Please keep in mind that PayPal deducts a small % for their services. I will set up a special page on our website in the next couple days with updates.

Carol and I are now back in the States and had a blessed Christmas with our daughter Anna, son in-law Kenny and granddaughters Keira and Clara. Sadly, I came down with malaria two days before leaving but was able to take medicine right away and minimize the symptoms during travel.  Upon arriving at Kenny and Anna’s, 3 of us (Keira, Carol and I) suffered some respiratory troubles which brought some disappointment to the expectations of a joyful Christmas celebration together.  We are all gradually making our way back to health.  All in all, it has still been a joy to be together, to enjoy coffee and snuggles, laughs and stories and other good things–together!  We look forward to this coming week of having good health and time to make some memories with fun activities. This is the first stop of many in the coming two months.

Carol and I, as well as the Reaching Africa’s Unreached team, are grateful for all the prayers and support we lovingly receive from friends and churches. Because of God’s grace and his people we are able to walk out 2 Timothy 2:2, training leaders from our West Nile of Uganda as well as South Sudan and the Republic of (North) Sudan. We have access to the latter two groups because of their residing in our area as refugees.

With our 20 acre campus we are also have the opportunity to teach “Farming as a Business” to these same leaders and future leaders. This gives the leaders a means to make money for their families and to teach their church members to do the same. Our agricultural aspect of the ministry also has opened wide doors of opportunity to empower our local agrarian community as well as “adorning” our evangelism efforts

By God’s grace we purpose to press on in 2020 with these God given tasks. It is over 13 years ago years ago I came here to Afoji Moyo and South Sudan for ministry. We are on the ground and rub shoulders daily with the nationals with their culture. We are not “short term-ers.” It is our prayer that the Lord would grace Carol and me with some more decades on this earth and in useful service at RAU and that Reaching Africa’s Unreached would walk out 2 Timothy 2:2 from generation to generation.
We know that many good organizations and causes make appeals at this time of year just as we make ours. May God give each of you wisdom. The task of reaching the roughly 2.8 billion of the world who have little to no access to the gospel is huge BUT we serve a great God. Let us all, as followers of Christ, live sacrificially so these 2.8 billion will be reached and taught all things which Christ has commanded!
The video below gives you a walk through the campus of Reaching Africa’s Unreached. It will be easy for you to see that it is not a professional video. It is just me pouring out my heart.

Some Video Updates

Merry Christmas from Reaching Africa’s Unreached Family
We are making our way back to the States for a visit now. Please pray for us in all our travels. Our first stop is in Stephenville,Texas,  with our daughter Anna and her husband Kenny and granddaughters Keira and Clara. After some precious days there with them and our wonderful Rocky Point Baptist friends we head on to Colorado Springs to our son Joshua/ Rebecca and grandchildren Eliza,Ben,Vera,Nora, and Olivia. Then, we move on to Chattanooga to our son Josiah and daughter in law, Unyae. You may remember our first stop last year was to  Chattanooga for their wedding. After that we have one more family visit to Iowa to see my parents (who are both in their 90’s) and as many other family members as possible. We pray the Lord will bless this time with family and we can making lasting memories, most especially with the grandchildren. From there we are off to visit some of supporting churches and dear friends.
MAF now flies into and out of Moyo any weekday if booked in advance. It makes travel to Moyo much, much easier!  I asked the MAF pilot if he would loop back around so we could see RAU from the air and he did. Here is the video Carol took from the plane. The place has, by God’s grace and his people, been transformed! The aerial view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AP6jsrqj3ZA.  It was easy to identify the RAU campus from the air because the surrounding land is bush.  The Eucalyptus trees provide a very clear perimeter from the air and the neat rows of mangoes and bananas is quite impressive, not to mention all the red roofs!  We had told our coworkers that we might be flying over and they were all out there on the driveway, waiting to see us fly over.  We could see them well but they don’t show up well in the video.
Here is a video of a recent drive to Oyo Community Church in the Metu Mountains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H1dkvVUdsE.  It paints a clear picture of the challenges of reaching certain remote areas
Then, we also posted a  video of a walk through of the RAU campus which gives a ground view of RAU’s 20 acres:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhHZbxJn0Z4. It’s a bit long, but I believe it gives you the best comprehensive view of all the different projects that are happening, from building to gardening and most importantly our seeking to walk out 2 Timothy 2:2.  It really is amazing to look back (picture history here) at early pictures of the land before any big changes and now to see how far the work has come.  It’s a blessing to see the Lord’s hand in all that has been accomplished.

Time has been a constraining factor in getting out another detailed newsletter with pictures.  However, while in the USA, we hope to write a “Year in Review” article with pictures so we can properly give glory to God’s grace and His love through all of you who support what we do.  May God bless you as you celebrate the birth of hope in the birth of Christ this Christmas season!  A blessed Christmas and New Year to all of you, our beloved family and friends.
Thank you for your precious prayers and gifts of support. By God’s grace given through you the gospel is being proclaimed through us and co-workers in Uganda, South Sudan and the Republic of (North) Sudan. With your prayers and support we will press on in 2020  on our “end of the rope” which you are holding.
God is GOOD and He is GOOD all the time!

Thank you and God Bless you,

Jacob and Carol Lee

The greatest evil is having the gospel and not doing everything within our power to get it to those who do not have it!
 ———–
When at least 35% of the world, “the unoccupied fields”, have no access to the gospel, we (believers) must all do all we can to reach them. We who are saved owe the gospel to every lost person, most especially the 2.4 billion who will not hear unless someone breaks into their “unoccupied field” with no thought of their own life!
 —————-
Sowing seeds of love and kindness should not be separated from preaching the gospel of sovereign grace but completely intertwined with it!
 —————-
I am sure that none of us will say when in heaven that we prayed too much, we sacrificed too much, proclaimed the gospel too much, and were too passionate to get the gospel to those who have little to no access to this gospel of grace. Let us together press on to make it our  ambition to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named!
—————
Our goal in our gospel witness is to take our eyes off the “risk” and place them on the cause for the risk. When God compels us like this he often will not tell us the risks…after all there are no risks for the all-knowing, all-powerful God. So let us be AMBITIOUS (Romans 15:20) to see that ALL are reached with the gospel of grace (Romans 1:16) in ALL places…there are no closed doors to the gospel, just some which are more difficult to go through!
